The 24-year-old shortstop is capitalizing on Detroit’s youth movement, flashing multi-hit potential and defensive reliability as he fights for a permanent spot on the Tigers' future roster.

It hasn’t been the exact season the Detroit Tigers were hoping for, but through adversity comes opportunity. A.J. Hinch’s ball club was eliminated from playoff contention before September got underway, but with that came an opportunity for younger players to show they belong in the big leagues on an everyday basis.

One of the young players making waves at the MLB level for the Tigers is 24-year-old shortstop John Peck.

The right-handed hitter made his MLB debut just five days ago, and over his first 12 at-bats, Peck has reached base five times while hitting .364 over his last three games.

Peck made his debut on September 1, reaching base in his first at-bat. However, it was ruled an error after the pitcher was unable to handle a tapper back to the mound. Peck was aboard for the first time in the big leagues, but he was still searching for that elusive first career hit.

He finished the game 0-for-4 and would have to wait another day to get his first taste of a hit in the majors.

The following day, Detroit was able to defeat Minnesota and steal at least one game of the series, with Peck playing a major role in the victory.

Peck not only notched his first career hit, but he also roped an opposite-field double for his first career two-base hit. The two hits helped produce three RBI for Peck, while he also scored a run.

He finished the game 2-for-5 and was officially off and running in the big leagues.

His next game was lackluster, to say the least, as the Tigers’ nemesis, the Cleveland Guardians, proved to be too much for Peck. He went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, but that rough outing didn’t slow him down for long.

Peck bounced back Saturday night with his second career multi-hit game in just four games as a big leaguer.

The young shortstop went 2-for-3 with a walk, reaching base three times in his four plate appearances. Both hits were singles, but Peck continued to do his job at the plate, helping move runners along in a 6-0 Detroit victory.

Through his first four games, Peck is hitting .267 with a .333 slugging percentage and a .353 on-base percentage.

Those numbers may be from an extremely small sample size, but Peck is already showing flashes of being a player who could have a role in Detroit’s future.

With only 20 games remaining in the season, the Tigers have a limited window to evaluate their young players at the major-league level. Peck has taken advantage of his opportunity early on, and the organization will be eager to see how he finishes the season.

If Peck continues to produce, these final few weeks could provide an important glimpse into whether he has a legitimate shot at earning a spot on the Tigers’ Opening Day roster next season.
