Riding a scorching hitting streak, Detroit’s prized rookie is fueling an improbable September surge as the Tigers trade power for contact to ignite their late-season playoff push.
Detroit Tigers 21-year-old rookie Max Clark has been on a tear over the past six games, hitting .429 during a six-game hitting streak while the club has won six in a row. The Tigers now sit 5 games back in the AL Central with 11 games remaining and a late-season pulse that a lot of people already wrote off.
The third overall pick in the 2023 draft waited his turn in the minors. Once August flipped onto the calendar, Max Clark was a Tiger — and he was here to stay.
Clark is carving out a role as a genuine pain in the side for opposing pitchers, spraying the ball all over the field. He has not gone more than two games in a row without reaching base and now rides that six-game hitting streak while helping Detroit inch closer to a playoff berth as the season dwindles down.
Over the past six games Clark has nine hits. He has 10 hits over his last eight. Those nine hits in the six-game stretch have produced eight runs. He’s doubled three times, added his third home run of the season, driven in six, walked four times, and struck out just three times. The speed has shown up too — three stolen bases in that span, caught only once.
Clark’s ability to drive the ball the opposite way down the left-field line has become one of the more dangerous swings in the league right now. He’s putting the ball on that line on a near-daily basis, and a few of those have turned into game-winning or game-changing hits. Max Clark is becoming the contact-oriented, base-hit knocker the Tigers have needed for years.
The Tigers were good the last two seasons by baking in the big plants — long balls and elite pitching. What they often lacked was a guy who could simply get a base hit at any point in the game from any spot in the lineup. With the youth movement in full swing, that mindset is shifting toward a more station-to-station, put-the-ball-in-play approach. In my opinion, that’s the best way to stack wins in September.
When Max Clark reaches base in a game, the Tigers are 18-11. When he fails to reach base, they’re an astonishing 2-10.
On the season Clark is batting .278 with a .354 on-base percentage and an .805 OPS through 41 games. He has 10 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 22 RBIs, five stolen bases, and 14 walks.
The Tigers’ rookie sensations have been flying around the field and showing exactly what the future can look like in Detroit. This team isn’t going away, no matter how many people doubted them. They remain five games out with 11 to play. And when it comes to young players leading a late charge like the one Detroit is making, sometimes it’s better to be young and a little bit dumb than anything else.
