I am not reporting inside information or claiming to know what the Detroit Tigers' front office will do. The goal of this series is to examine players I believe are realistic trade targets based on each team's situation, the Tigers' needs, and what a potential deal could look like. "}},{"id":"_Lyib1BgCV","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Trade-deadline season is always a mix of real possibility and pure fan fiction, so this series is built around one simple idea: separate the Tigers fits that make baseball sense from the ones that only work on social media or sports talk radio or whatever platform you get your news from. "}},{"id":"DqxUjHLETA","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"And when it comes to Tarik Skubal, the Milwaukee Brewers belong near the top of the realistic list, not because a move is easy, but because the Brewers are one of the few contenders with both the need and the prospect capital to have a serious conversation. Similar to the Dodgers, just a matter of who will blink first or if the Brewers go back to someone they already know in Freddy Peralta or go somewhere else without giving a haul of prospects like it was reported they are checking in on Kevin Gausman, Reid Detmers and José Soriano. "}},{"id":"wnCKI7ZOg_","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"The Brewers made one of the biggest deadline splashes in franchise history on July 7, 2008, when they acquired Cleveland left-hander C.C. Sabathia for Matt LaPorta, Zach Jackson, Rob Bryson and a player to be named later, who became Michael Brantley. Sabathia went 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA in 17 starts and helped push Milwaukee to its first postseason appearance since 1982. A lot has changed since then, but the lesson remains the same: when the Brewers believe an ace can change their October outlook, they have shown they are willing to think bigger than their market size"}},{"id":"gavMlMaBLG","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Milwaukee is not just “a contender.” It is a contender with a reason to think bigger than a depth-only deadline. Adam McCalvy reported on July 22 that the Brewers had the best record in franchise history at that point of the season and that club officials were prepared to take a more aggressive approach than usual. He also reported direct Milwaukee contact with Detroit on Skubal, while noting the organization’s recognition that the Dodgers remain the NL’s roadblock, which is the reason why I brought up the CC Sabathia trade but this is a better Brewers team than the 2008 squad."}},{"id":"DPVKuh7YYh","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"On the surface, the Brewers are not the most obvious Skubal fit because they are already really good on the mound. As of Wednesday, July 29, Milwaukee is 67-40 and six games up in the NL Central, and the club had a 3.42 team ERA, second-best in the Majors. But that is exactly why this is not really a regular-season discussion. The way out of the NL is through Los Angeles. MLB Pipeline lists him as Milwaukee’s No. 1 prospect, and McCalvy’s July reporting identified him as MLB Pipeline’s No. 1 overall prospect. Pipeline has also documented Made’s jump to Double-A, his age-19 production there, and his rise to No. 1 overall status. If Detroit can pry him loose, it should do it immediately; the issue is that Milwaukee almost certainly says no. "}},{"id":"YMxtwXM1iD","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Luis Peña is the more realistic premium centerpiece. McCalvy listed him as Milwaukee’s No. 2 prospect and No. 18 overall in MLB Pipeline’s current hierarchy, while MLB.com also noted that Peña’s recent “health scares” may complicate how clubs value him. Peña returned to play after dehydration-related fainting and subsequent medical evaluation earlier this season, so there is both upside and some risk to price in. For Detroit, that makes him a classic “high-ceiling but not clean” headliner. "}},{"id":"1JQporImbB","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Cooper Pratt belongs in this tier on talent, but not on availability. MLB.com reported that Pratt signed an eight-year major league deal in April worth just over $50 million guaranteed, and McCalvy’s June trade-chip piece said Pratt is not moving. The extension does not make a trade impossible in the abstract, but it makes one highly improbable for a deadline rental. McCalvy reported that Henderson is controllable through 2031, owns a 3.05 ERA and a 31.8% strikeout rate, and has already drawn interest from other clubs. The caution flags are his injury history, including a back strain this season and right elbow inflammation in 2025. If Detroit wants a ready-made major league starter instead of a farther-away prospect, Henderson is the most attractive Milwaukee answer. "}},{"id":"UXZR6zCb39","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Brandon Sproat is the other obvious upper-level arm. He is a major leaguer now, with a 5.05 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 92 2/3 innings in 2026, and he recently exited one game with a hamstring cramp that the club did not consider serious. Sproat is easier for Milwaukee to discuss than Henderson because the performance has been more uneven, but that also means Detroit would need more total pieces if Sproat is the top arm in the package. His speed is his best tool, allowing him to create problems on the bases while giving him the range needed to remain in center field. He has also shown more power than expected during his first full professional season, although there are still questions about how much of that will translate as he faces more advanced pitching."}},{"id":"ZiErMNrwG7","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"The closest comparison in the Tigers system would probably be Seth Stephenson. The Tigers as I said a number of times, outfield wise in the upper levels, do not have a lot of depth at the moment. Peña gives Detroit a potential up-the-middle star, Henderson gives it a near-term rotation piece, and Adamczewski adds another upside bat. Outside of Brantley, the return did not come close to replacing what Cleveland gave up. Then again, C.C signed with the Yankees.
