Torkelson's walk-off blast sealed a dramatic comeback win. Tigers conquer Brewers with late-game heroics and powerful hits.
Spencer Torkelson delivered a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday afternoon at Comerica Park.
The dramatic finish capped a back-and-forth contest in which Detroit was forced to overcome an uncharacteristically uneven outing from ace Tarik Skubal and a late-game deficit.
Torkelson led off the ninth against Milwaukee reliever Abner Uribe and drove a pitch to left-center field for his second home run of the season, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and securing the Tigers’ comeback win.
Detroit set the tone early behind a familiar source of consistency. Kevin McGonigle opened the first inning with a line-drive double to left field, extending his hitting streak to eight games. Two batters later, Riley Greene capitalized, launching a two-run home run to left-center to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Skubal appeared in control through the early innings. The left-hander struck out four of the first nine batters he faced and did not allow a baserunner through the first three innings. His fastball command and ability to change speeds kept Milwaukee off balance, reinforcing why he has been one of the most reliable starters in the American League.
The Brewers broke through in the fourth inning. William Contreras doubled to left field and came around to score on a Gary Sánchez RBI double, trimming Detroit’s lead to 2-1. Skubal settled in after the run, continuing to attack the strike zone, but Milwaukee’s contact began to trend louder as the game progressed.
Detroit added a run in the sixth inning to extend its lead. Colt Keith worked a walk and moved into scoring position before coming home on a Dillon Dingler forceout, pushing the advantage to 3-1.
The game shifted in the seventh.
Milwaukee mounted a rally as Blake Perkins delivered a two-run double to tie the game at 3. Shortly after, David Hamilton followed with an RBI single to give the Brewers their first lead at 4-3. The inning marked the end of Skubal’s outing, and the frustration was evident as he returned to the dugout. Despite a line of four runs allowed over six innings with no walks, the performance fell short of his recent standard.
Detroit responded in the eighth inning when Jahmai Jones, entering as a pinch hitter, connected on a solo home run to left field to tie the game at 4. The swing provided a critical momentum shift and kept the Tigers within striking distance heading into the final inning.
The bullpen delivered in key moments late. Burch Smith worked a clean eighth inning, and Brant Hurter navigated traffic in the ninth, inducing a double play that erased a potential go-ahead opportunity for Milwaukee.
That set the stage for Torkelson’s heroics.
With the game tied, Torkelson attacked early in the count and drove the ball deep to left-center off Brewers closer Abner Uribe, who throws a 100 mph plus sinker, giving Detroit its second walk-off win of the young season. That improves the Tigers to 10-2 at Comerica Park.
The Tigers finished the game relying on timely hitting and situational execution, overcoming a day in which they were outhit 10 to 7 and did not receive their typical level of dominance that fans expect from Skubal.
For Detroit, the victory underscored a growing ability to respond under pressure. While Skubal’s outing showed that even the most consistent arms can have off days and contributions throughout the lineup — including McGonigle’s continued emergence at the top — ensured the Tigers had enough to secure the win.
