The Minnesota Twins earned a 6-4 victory against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. It was a strong win for the Twins, who are trying to compete in the American League Central standings. Twins star Byron Buxton has led the team throughout the season, which is something that continued on Wednesday night. The outfielder hit his 20th home run of the 2026 campaign on Wednesday.
He is reportedly the third player in Twins franchise history to record 20 or more home runs through the team's first 69 games of a season, as he joined Justin Morneau and Harmon Killebrew according to Aaron Gleeman.
Killebrew is a Hall of Famer, while Morneau is one of the better Twins players in recent memory. Joining Killebrew and Morneau in Twins franchise history is an impressive feat to say the least.
Buxton, 32, is playing well so far during the 2026 season. He is now hitting .260/.322/.566 across 57 games played. Buxton has 20 home runs as mentioned to go along with 10 doubles.
While Minnesota has not played a tremendous brand of baseball overall this year, Buxton has helped the ball club stay in third place in the American League Central standings.
Byron Buxton Leads Twins to Win Once Again
The Twins and Tigers played on Wednesday. Buxton led Minnesota's lineup with two hits, three RBI and the aforementioned home run. The overall offense performed well, though, as every player in the lineup recorded at least one hit. They finished the game with 12 total hits overall.
Minnesota's pitching allowed four runs on seven hits in the win. Detroit made things interesting, but the Twins were able to hold on for the victory.
Minnesota now holds a 31-38 overall record. They are in third place in the AL Central as mentioned, as they trail the Chicago White Sox by 6.5 games for first place. The White Sox surpassed the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the division on Wednesday.
The Twins and Tigers will play the final matchup of their three-game series on Thursday afternoon. Minnesota and Detroit are currently tied 1-1 in the series.
Zebby Matthews (2-3, 4.15 ERA) will get the start for Minnesota. The Tigers are set to turn to Keider Montero (2-4, 3.95 ERA) in the ball game.
First pitch for the game on Thursday afternoon is scheduled for 1:10 PM EST in Detroit as the Twins look to win the series.
