Connor Prielipp stepped into an accelerated role in the Minnesota Twins’ rotation in 2026. But given his track record as a starting pitcher heading into the year, it may not have been what he expected — and he excelled either way.

Prielipp earned his first big league call-up in late April, making his major league debut against the New York Mets. It ended up being the first of many starts with Minnesota in a very solid rookie season.

Throughout the 2026 season, the left-hander made a total of 24 appearances, 22 of which were starts. Prielipp overcame some early season struggles to turn in an overall efficient season, continuing to adapt to major league hitting through such adversity. In fact, the total appearances turned out to be the most impressive facet of his game this year.

The southpaw ended up taking on a much heftier workload than he has been used to in his minor league career. Prielipp combined to pitch a total of 144 ⅓ innings throughout the year across the major leagues and Triple-A, which included 125 ⅔ frames with the Twins. However, that amount of pitching is not what his arm had been used to throwing.

Across three seasons in the minor leagues prior to 2026, Prielipp had combined to toss 112 ⅔ innings — a drastic differential for his arm to take on, as he combined to throw more innings in 2026 than the prior three years. He had always made a chunk of starts at the minor league level, but found himself going deeper into ballgames upon joining Minnesota.

Prielipp’s season with the Twins concluded with the southpaw recording a 4.87 ERA, a statistic he improved over the final month of the regular season. His command had been sharp all season, as he tossed 128 strikeouts to go with 44 walks this season.

What made Prielipp’s campaign an impressive one was his ability to adapt to the extensive role. He proved himself as a starting pitcher that Minnesota can aim to rely on going forward after what was a productive rookie season.

The southpaw’s final stretch of the year proved to be very encouraging going forward. Just as he was reaching new heights in innings pitched, he began to improve on the mound. In Prielipp’s last seven appearances of the season, five of which were starts, he posted a 3.79 ERA across 38 innings pitched, while walking just eight batters in that span.

Prielipp’s ability to adapt and prove to be efficient towards the end of the season has Minnesota looking forward to what he will give going forward. He showed he can be an effective starter in a rotation that lacked that depth in 2026, with an encouraging amount of room to improve going forward.
