The Minnesota Twins and left-handed relief pitcher Andrew Chafin are in agreement on a contract for the 2026 MLB season, per Dan Hayes. It is a minor league deal for Chafin, and the contract includes an invite to 2026 spring training.
Chafin, 35, is a veteran reliever. He has pitched at the big league level since 2014. While he's pitched for a number of teams in his MLB career, Chafin most recently appeared with the Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Angels in 2025.
He quietly had a productive campaign, pitching to a strong 2.41 ERA between his time in Anaheim and Washington. He appeared in 42 total contests as well, playing a big role for both ball clubs.
Chafin has been one of the more underrated southpaws in the game for a long time. He holds a career 3.35 ERA. It is surprising to see that he only received a minor league contract, but one has to imagine that Chafin will have a legitimate opportunity to make the Twins' Opening Day roster.
Minnesota's bullpen features plenty of uncertainty. It is currently not clear who will serve as the closer -- or if the Twins will even have just one closer. A closer-by-committee is an option for the team.
Additionally, while most teams carry two or three left-handed relievers, the Twins could have four if Chafin makes the roster, as Taylor Rogers, Kody Funderburk and Anthony Banda are left-handed hurlers as well.
Of course, the Twins could always make unforeseen roster moves or even more additions. The bullpen is far from officially set at the moment.
As for Chafin, though, he will prepare for spring training as a member of a new ball club. He is hoping to make the team and help Minnesota throughout the 2026 campaign.
If the Twins struggle -- which is unquestionably a possibility -- Chafin could emerge as a trade candidate ahead of the '26 deadline. The Twins may be able to get a quality prospect or two for him if the southpaw has another strong campaign. Almost every contender in baseball would not mind adding a valuable left-handed arm to their bullpen, especially if he is a proven veteran like Chafin.
For now, the Twins are focused on Chafin's spring training performance. If he has at least a respectable spring, Chafin should be able to make the Opening Day roster.
