The Minnesota Twins had an update on rookie shortstop Kaelen Culpepper.
Kaelen Culpepper has been excellent for the Minnesota Twins since making his big-league debut in August. The 23-year-old shortstop has fully taken over the position and thrived, as expected from a first-round pick and top-ranked prospect.
Across his first 30 games, Culpepper has posted a .283 batting average, .342 on-base percentage, .757 OPS, three home runs and 11 RBIs while playing excellent defense up the middle, giving the Twins a legitimate building block at a premium position for years to come.
The Twins' future is bright thanks to young pieces like Culpepper, and he has been helping them with their push for the final American League wild card spot. Unfortunately, just like the past couple of seasons, Minnesota has struggled since the All-Star break and sits well out of postseason contention with just a couple of weeks remaining.
Entering Sunday's series finale against the Cleveland Guardians they own a 70-78 record, sitting 4.5 games back of the final AL wild card spot with very little runway left to make a run.
During Saturday's game against Cleveland, Culpepper was drilled in the upper back area near his right shoulder by Guardians reliever Franco Aleman. He immediately went down in pain and started walking to first base, but manager Derek Shelton and the training staff decided not to risk anything further and pulled him from the game. After the game the team had an encouraging update on his status.
"Twins say Kaelen Culpepper has a right shoulder contusion and x-rays were negative for a fracture," reported Twins writer Aaron Gleeman.
Given how important Culpepper is beyond just the 2026 season, he is likely not going to play Sunday for the series finale either, with Ryan Kreidler drawing the start in his absence. Even with the x-rays coming back clean he could still be experiencing soreness that makes it impractical to put him out there in a game that carries little playoff significance for Minnesota at this point in the standings.
Culpepper will look to return to the starting nine Monday when the Twins prepare to host the New York Yankees for a three-game set. He has years of team control remaining, and alongside Walker Jenkins and Emmanuel Rodriguez, who made his big-league debut Saturday and homered in his very first at-bat, this Twins roster is genuinely exciting heading into the future.
Regardless of how the rest of this season plays out, Minnesota is set up well for 2027 and beyond as long as they can keep their young core healthy and developing at this rate.
