As the Minnesota Twins ramp up for the 2026 season, much of the focus has centered on how the club’s core players are responding to last year’s challenging stretch in the standings. One of the Twins’ most dependable arms, right‑hander Joe Ryan, offered candid remarks at spring training that reflect both gratitude and commitment as he prepares for another pivotal campaign in Minnesota.
Ryan has quietly become a fixture in the Twins’ rotation since being acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2021 trade that sent retired slugger Nelson Cruz to Tampa Bay. Over the past few seasons, he has developed into one of the most reliable starters in the American League, capable of logging innings and keeping opposing offenses in check. His performance has also made him a frequent subject of trade speculation at past deadlines, but Minnesota has consistently chosen to keep him as a foundational piece.
As he reflected on the current state of the roster, Ryan shared his feelings about the Twins’ direction and his place in it. “I’m really happy to be here,” Ryan said according to Dan Hayes of The Athletic. “If they started shipping off more guys, it would have been a little bit harder. But we’ve got Buck and Pablo here, (Bailey Ober is) here and (Ryan) Jeffers is here — the guys that have been here since I got here. There’s a few of us left. I think the young guys are great and (we’ve got) a lot of guys to build around. We’ll be in a good spot.”
Ryan’s comments highlight his leadership role within a rotation the Twins hope will again be a strength. His 2025 season was one of the best of his career. The 29‑year‑old finished with a 13‑10 record, a 3.42 ERA, 194 strikeouts and a 1.035 WHIP over 171 innings across 31 appearances. That performance ranked him among the league’s more effective starters and earned him his first All‑Star selection.
Ryan’s consistency has been vital for Minnesota, particularly as the offense has fluctuated and questions remain about depth across multiple positions. His rise from mid‑rotation prospect to true frontline starter stands out as one of the organization’s most important developments in recent years.
The significance of Ryan’s admission goes beyond roster loyalty. With team control through 2027 and a strong track record, he is more than just another rotation arm. As Minnesota prepares for Opening Day, Ryan’s presence remains central to the club’s hopes for a rebound. His performance, leadership and steady approach make him one of the most important figures on the roster, and his belief in the team’s direction sets an encouraging tone for the season ahead.
