The Twins made a trade on Wednesday.
The Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays agreed to a trade on Wednesday, the teams announced. Minnesota acquired right-handed pitcher Yoendrys Gomez from the Rays for cash considerations. The move gives Minnesota pitching depth, which certainly never hurts to have.
Gomez, 26, made his big league debut in 2023 with the New York Yankees. He appeared in only five total MLB games between 2023 and 2024 with New York, however.
In 2025, Gomez made appearances with the Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox. He ended up making a total of 21 appearances, nine of which were starts. He finished the season with a 5.17 ERA.
Gomez joined the Ray for the 2026 campaign. Through nine outings out of the bullpen, the right-handed pitcher turned in a 6.23 ERA. He was recently designated for assignment by the Rays, which ultimately led to the trade on Wednesday.
It will be interesting to see how the Twins use Gomez. Minnesota will only benefit from having another pitcher on the ball club. Minnesota is just 20th in team ERA and 19th in WHIP so far this season. The bullpen has especially had question marks.
Yoendrys Gomez's performance has not been ideal. He will not save the Twins' bullpen, but sometimes all a player needs is a fresh start, though. Perhaps he will take a step forward in Minnesota with the Twins.
What's Next for the Twins?
The Twins made the trade on Wednesday before their game against the Nationals in Washington. Minnesota won the first game of the series on Tuesday night, earning a strong 11-3 victory. With the win, the Twins improved to 16-20, but they are still in last place in the American League Central at the moment.
However, Minnesota is only a game and half back of first place in the division. The Twins could potentially compete in the AL Central this year despite the fact that it was expected to be a rebuilding season for them. The AL Central does not have a clear favorite right now.
On Wednesday night, Minnesota will play the second of a three-game series against the Nationals on the road. Bailey Ober (3-1, 3.55 ERA) has performed well in 2026 and he will get the start. Meanwhile, Miles Mikolas (0-3, 8.23 ERA) is set to start for the Nationals.
First pitch for the Twins and Nationals game is scheduled for 6:45 PM EST on Wednesday night.
