Minnesota Twins Make Trade with Red Sox Ahead of Spring Training cover image

The Twins and Red Sox made a trade.

The Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox reportedly agreed to a trade on Tuesday night. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, Minnesota is acquiring utility man Tristan Gray in return for catching prospect Nate Baez.

Baez, a 24-year-old catcher, spent the 2025 season between the A+ and Double-A levels of the Twins' minor league system. Overall, he appeared in 98 games, slashing .278/.371/.423 to go along with eight home runs and 17 doubles. Baez is a prospect who features potential, and he could make an impact with the Red Sox in the future.

Gray, 29, is a utility man who offers defensive versatility. He can play first, second or third base. Gray was traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the Red Sox earlier in the offseason, and now he is set to join the Twins in Minnesota.

In 30 games played with Tampa Bay in 2025, the infielder slashed .231/.282/.410. He added three home runs and five doubles. In 72 games played at Triple-A, Gray hit .270/.333/.472 across 248 at-bats. He recorded an overall .805 OPS and hit nine home runs.

Twins' set to Benefit from Added Offensive Depth#

Minnesota can certainly use the offensive depth. The overall lineup could make some noise in 2026, but they need a few more reliable bats. Byron Buxton will lead the way, while players such as Josh Bell, Luke Keaschall, Royce Lewis and Matt Wallner will help matters.

Bringing in a guy such as Gray will help as well. The Twins' lack much in the way of offensive depth at the moment, and Gray has displayed signs of potential in the past. Giving up a young and promising catcher was not ideal, but the Twins seem to want to compete in 2026. As a result, they need all of the help they can get.

With that being said, Gray may not even begin the 2026 campaign with the big league team. He will have to impress in spring training in order to earn a role. Even if he begins the year at Triple-A, Gray will be a candidate to receive a big league promotion later in the season.

Now, Twins fans will wonder if the ball club will make any more notable moves ahead of spring training. Minnesota still has a few weeks to make moves, but they have not been connected to any especially notable players in trade or free agency rumors.
