Walker Jenkins delivered with his first career pinch-hit single during Minnesota's series finale against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
Walker Jenkins showed once again that the Minnesota Twins' late-season decision to call him up to the major-league roster paid off after he recorded his first career pinch-hit single during an at-bat in the seventh inning of Wednesday's matchup against the San Francisco Giants.
Manager Derek Shelton's strategy proved to be the difference maker as the Twins came away with a 4-2 victory and the series win at Oracle Park.
Following the matchup, he expressed his faith in the 21-year-old rookie's resiliency after being in a 4-for-45 slump at the plate prior to the team's series against the Los Angeles Angels this past weekend.
"You've got to give him credit," Shelton said, according to MLB.com. "When you're [4-for-45], then to go into Anaheim and do what he did, and then come back here, just to climb up. He's going to be a good hitter. He's going to play in the league for a long time. Just to be able to balance that out as we get toward the end of the season is extremely important."
Luke Keaschall struck first in the third with a solo shot to left field off Giants starter César Perdomo. Shay Whitcomb answered back in the fourth, driving in Bo Davidson and Andrew Knizner for the lead.
Keaschall tied it in the fifth with a sacrifice fly that drove in Ben Ross who later got subbed out for Jenkins.
Other than the clutch hit, Jenkins contributed once more, coming into score the game-sealing run off an RBI single by veteran designated hitter Josh Bell.
San Francisco attempted a final effort in the ninth when Drew Gilbert singled and Marcelo Mayer drew a competitive five-pitch walk, but reliever Andrew Morris held on to get Whitcomb down swinging to end the matchup.
With the win, Jenkins is now batting a commendable .222 while recording a .717 OPS and knocking in 10 RBI this season. He has also launched four home runs.
Jenkins had a solid first week of games when he first made his debut, most notably going 1-for-3 in a blowout win over the division rival Detroit Tigers on Aug. 31.
Even though he went on to have the disappointing stretch, his performance on Wednesday demonstrated just why Shelton and general manager Jeremy Zoll never gave up on him.
Furthermore, Jenkins' history of performing like he did on Wednesday was also an influential factor in the team selecting him fifth overall in the 2023 MLB Draft.
While Minnesota is now out of the playoff picture, Jenkins has also given the club a glimpse of his future potential with fellow rookie Emmanuel Rodríguez and other younger pieces like Keaschall continuing to step up.
Jenkins should be primed for his next opportunity to shine during the Twins' final series of the regular season this weekend back at Target Field against the Texas Rangers.
