The Minnesota Twins made a roster move on Wednesday, announcing on X that they have claimed infielder/outfielder Vidal Brujan off waivers from the Atlanta Braves.
To clear space, the Twins designated catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper for assignment, keeping their 40‑man roster at full capacity.
Brujan, originally signed by the Tampa Bay Rays out of the Dominican Republic, was once considered one of baseball’s more intriguing prospects. From 2019 through 2022, he consistently appeared on Top 100 lists thanks to his athleticism, versatility and offensive potential. Now 28 years old, Brujan has yet to establish himself at the big‑league level despite opportunities with several clubs.
During the 2025 season, Brujan saw time with the Chicago Cubs, Baltimore Orioles and Braves. He logged 94 plate appearances overall, producing a .253 batting average, a .305 on‑base percentage, a .616 OPS and eight RBIs. Over parts of five big‑league seasons, he has also appeared for the Rays and Miami Marlins. However, his cumulative line of .199/.267/.276 illustrates the difficulty he has faced translating his minor‑league success to the majors.
Once known for blazing speed, Brujan’s quickness has diminished in recent years. Even so, he remains a capable contact hitter who can draw walks at a respectable clip. His greatest value lies in his defensive flexibility, having played nearly every position on the diamond except catcher. That versatility could make him a useful bench piece if he can provide more consistent offense.
In Triple A, Brujan has shown far more promise, but because he is out of minor‑league options, the Twins cannot send him down without exposing him to waivers again. That adds intrigue to how Minnesota will handle his role. His arrival also creates a crowded mix of players competing for bench spots. Outfielder James Outman, utility man Kody Clemens and former top prospect Edouard Julien are all out of options as well, meaning the Twins will need to make difficult decisions before Opening Day.
As for Gasper, the 30‑year‑old switch hitter was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in December 2024. He appeared in 45 games for Minnesota last season, batting .158 with two home runs and 11 RBIs. His defensive versatility, having played first base, second base, third base, left field and catcher, could draw interest from other clubs via waivers or trade.
The Twins’ decision underscores the balancing act of roster management as they weigh upside, versatility and depth while preparing for the 2026 season.
