The Twins have a number of big decisions to make before the trade deadline.
The Minnesota Twins are currently in last place in the American League Central standings. While they are only 3.5 games back of first place, the chances of the Twins realistically competing this year are slim. Between injuries and underperformance, this ball club is likely going to sell at the trade deadline. That is where the questions are already starting to begin.
Players such as Byron Buxton and Joe Ryan were mentioned in trade rumors this past offseason. It seemed as if both stars could be moved. There were even some rumors about Royce Lewis. Minnesota later said that it planned on keeping its stars, however.
If the Twins are unable to compete this year, one has to imagine the players will at least be available in trade talks, even if the ball club is not aggressively trying to trade them.
Other players may also draw interest before the trade deadline. Bailey Ober could emerge as a trade candidate.
The big question is whether or not the Twins will trade their star players, though. Their availability will go a long way toward determining how the trade deadline goes this year.
Should Twins Trade Their Stars?
Lewis' situation is interesting. He has been limited due to injury this season. He has also struggled while on the field. However, he is under contract through 2028.
If the Twins make him available, his high ceiling and contract will surely catch teams' attention. With that being said, his difficult season so far is also something that cannot be ignored. Lewis may benefit from a fresh start, however.
Buxton is the best player on the team. He is also under contract through the 2028 season. The Twins star already has 11 home runs to go along with an .812 OPS in 2026. Minnesota may consider moving him if the team receives a strong offer.
Ryan is arguably the most likely to be made available for a trade. He has a mutual option for 2027. The 29-year-old will draw interest before the trade deadline as many teams need starting pitching help. The 2025 All-Star has pitched to a 3.72 ERA so far in 2026.
So, will the Twins trade these players? Their performance over the next couple of months will go a long way toward their final decision. Assuming they do not compete, Minnesota should at least consider rebuilding and trading the stars for prospects for the future.
