The Twins need to figure out their franchise direction.

The Minnesota Twins need to figure out their franchise direction soon. Trade rumors swirled throughout the offseason but Minnesota decided not to move a number of star players. However, the Twins are not currently close to competing. Could they shock the MLB world? Anything is possible, but the chances of this ball club realistically making a playoff run in 2026 are slim.

In all reality, most people could have said that before the season even began. Minnesota is 1-3 to begin the new campaign and the team does not look good by any means right now.

We do not want to overreact to a 1-3 start. However, the Twins look like the team most people around the MLB world thought they would be. The Twins' decision to not enter a rebuild this past offseason is becoming a mistake that is impossible to ignore.

Twins' Winning Timeline

The Twins have All-Star caliber players on the roster. Byron Buxton features the ceiling of an MVP candidate. Royce Lewis could become a true star someday. Joe Ryan is a good pitcher without question.

With all of that being said, this team simply does not have enough depth to compete. Additionally, Pablo Lopez's injury only adds to the team's uncertainty.

The Twins will not be the worst team in MLB this year. They also likely won't compete. Minnesota will probably have a mediocre season and end up finishing in fourth place in the American League Central. They won't be good enough to push for the playoffs, but they won't be bad enough to earn a top draft pick either.

Rebuilding is the clear path for this team. They could have started the rebuild this past offseason, which would have moved up their timeline to win. Now, unless they do shock the MLB world, the 2026 season will be a wasted one in Minnesota.

Some may argue that it is too early to definitely call the Twins' offseason decision a mistake. It's a fair point, as it has only been four games. With that being said, it was clearly the wrong decision. The franchise has no direction at the moment.

Perhaps Minnesota will realize where the team is at and begin a rebuild before the trade deadline. Players such as Buxton and Ryan would catch plenty of attention in potential trades in July.

Only time will tell if Minnesota ends up making that decision, though.
