The New York Yankees may not wait forever for Cody Bellinger as concerns grow the longer he isn't re-signed.

The New York Yankees are still trying to accomplish their top priority of the offseason, but the saga has grown more complicated and drawn out than expected. That has led to a stalemate with former NL MVP Cody Bellinger, who the Yankees offered a five-year, $160 million deal to already. The top free agent on the market has yet to receive any other formal offers, but his agent, Scott Boras, is obviously in the business of making sure his client is paid. Could that lead to New York moving on and leaving the situation in the dust?

With talks essentially at a standstill, reports have surfaced that New York is looking elsewhere in the trade market for another bat. There’s only so much they can do when they’ve extended what they feel to be a fair offer for a 30-year-old who has a few standout seasons. He has a concerning injury history to consider as well. Another important point to consider is how Bellinger has actually performed, specifically away Yankee Stadium. His home-road splits are so skewed that it puts into question the worth of the deal for the slugger.

Here is the full story from Yankees Roundtable writer Matthew Schmidt on that concerning analysis of Bellinger’s splits and why it makes sense that New York isn’t breaking the bank to get this done.

As Schmidt points out, Bellinger slashed .302/.365/.544 at home in his 2025 campaign. That is vastly different than his away splits, where he slashed .241/.301/.414. He has a lot of inconsistencies that are displayed through a wide range of OPS metrics throughout his career. Sure, the home splits are enticing when Bellinger will play half the games there. But they do imply that the market might not be as vast as his agent believes it to be outside of New York.
