A four-run third inning stunned a sold-out South Side crowd as Chicago missed a historic chance to clinch, forcing a pivotal Game 4 at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The Chicago White Sox could not close it out in Game 3.

The White Sox fell to the Cleveland Guardians in Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 9-3. The South Siders were looking to close out the series at Rate Field, but the Guardians' four-run third inning was enough in this game.

In front of a sold-out crowd, the White Sox were looking to win their first home clinching postseason game since they defeated the Chicago Cubs in six games during the 1906 playoffs. White Sox fans came ready to support their hometown team on Wednesday in hopes of advancing to the American League Championship Series.

However, the White Sox will have to wait one more day.

Chicago struck first in the bottom of the first inning with three solid at-bats. Sam Antonacci drew a five-pitch walk, Miguel Vargas singled on a slider on the outside part of the zone, and Kyle Teel drove in Antonacci with an RBI double in the frame.

The Guardians answered two innings later in the top of the third. With the White Sox having a bullpen game in Game 3 of the ALDS, Bryan Hudson relieved Sean Newcomb at the top of the inning. Hudson, though, got into a bit of trouble in this relief appearance.

He allowed three of the first four hitters he faced to reach base. He walked Travis Bazzana, gave up a hard-hit single to Brayan Rocchio, and allowed another hard-hit single to Steven Kwan that brought in a run to tie up the game.

Hagen Smith immediately relieved Hudson, but he couldn’t get out of that jam. He walked Jose Ramirez, got Chase DeLauter to ground out to a force, and then allowed a go-ahead three-run triple to Jo Adell. That bases-clearing double proved to be the difference in the loss.

The White Sox had their chances to rally back in the middle innings. They had back-to-back doubles to begin the fourth inning to cut the deficit to two and had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. But Chicago couldn’t get that big hit.

The White Sox will now shift their focus to a pivotal Game 4. They will host the Guardians at Rate Field on Thursday. This will be the South Siders’ biggest game of the season. The team can’t afford to go back to Cleveland with all the momentum on the other side.
