Chicago flips veteran outfielder Derek Hill for a pair of high-upside prospects, clearing a potential roster path for Everson Pereira’s imminent return from the injured list.
The Chicago White Sox are making moves.
The White Sox have traded outfielder Derek Hill to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for outfield prospect Dylan Campbell and infield prospect Jose Colmenares. Chicago is also sending Philadelphia international bonus money.

Hill was a solid bench contributor for the White Sox in his 50 games with the team. He slashed .213/.284/.375 with four home runs, one double, eight RBI, and seven stolen bases before being dealt on Thursday afternoon.
The White Sox getting rid of Hill signals that outfielder Everson Pereira should be close to a return from his pectoral strain. Pereira has been on the injured list since late April, but his return is on the horizon after beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte last week.
Pereira is batting .357 (5-for-14) with two home runs and three RBI in four games on this current rehab assignment. Hill’s departure from this roster signals that the 25-year-old is not too far behind from returning to the active roster.
With Pereira soon back into the outfield fold, Hill’s services weren’t needed any longer. He likely wasn’t going to see many opportunities moving forward with Pereira, Tristan Peters, Sam Antonacci, and Braden Montgomery all mixing in the outfield.
It’s nice work by the White Sox to get something in return for Hill, who was a strong candidate to get designated for assignment once Pereira was healthy enough to return. Hill has no options remaining, so it was either keep him on the active roster or designate him for assignment.
Chicago will instead take a chance on two younger prospects.
Campbell is a 23-year-old outfielder currently at Double-A. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he has struggled with consistency in each of his last two seasons in the minors.
In 2025, he slashed .215/.298/.367 with 14 home runs, 23 doubles, and 60 RBI across 122 games at High-A and Double-A. This year, Campbell is batting just .216 with seven home runs and 31 RBI across 55 games at Double-A.
The one thing that makes Campbell exciting is his power potential. He hit 10 home runs in his first full professional season at High-A in 2024, had 14 long balls last year, and could hit above 15 homers this season.
As for Colmenares, he’s in the midst of his best professional season. He’s slashing .278/.403/.413 with three home runs, six doubles, one triple, and five stolen bases across 36 games at High-A.
Colmenares is still a raw prospect at 24 years old, but he’s showing growth as a contact hitter. He is finally putting everything together after batting .227 in his first four professional seasons from 2019 to 2025.
