The New York Yankees have completed their first trade before the MLB deadline.

The New York Yankees completed a deal on Saturday with the MLB trade deadline just two days away, sending relief pitcher Camilo Doval to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for catcher Omar Alfonzo and outfielder Luis Cruz.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com was the first to report the news.

The Doval experiment was a disaster in the Bronx.

New York initially acquired the right-hander from the San Francisco Giants at last year's deadline, hoping he would stabilize what had been a very shaky bullpen.

However, Doval ended up posting a 4.82 ERA over 22 relief appearances, logging an alarming 1.607 WHIP.

The 29-year-old did show some positive signs late in the season and in the playoffs, so there was hope that the former All-Star could turn things around in 2026.

That did not happen, as Doval pitched to the tune of a 4.54 ERA through 44 outings, recording a 1.412 WHIP while averaging a career-low 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

Alfonzo is a 22-year-old backstop who is slashing .238/.337/.419 with nine home runs and 35 RBI over 247 minor-league plate appearances this season, most of which have come in Double-A. He is a decent defender with moderate offensive potential.

The Minneapolis, Mn. native joined the Pirates' organization in 2021 and has achieved a lifetime .240/.360/.386 slash line with 44 homers and 198 RBI across 1,644 trips to the dish in the minor leagues.

Cruz is just 18 years old and debuted for Pittsburgh's minor-league system last year, slashing .240/.400/.310 with no homers and 18 RBI over 131 plate appearances in Rookie Ball. His plate discipline was notable, as he walked 23 times with just 19 strikeouts.

This season, the Dominican Republic product is slashing .313/.460/.396 with no home runs and seven RBI across 64 trips to the plate. Once again, his plate discipline has been on full display, as he has tallied 12 walks compared to just two punchouts.

Considering that Doval was looking like a lost cause in New York, this was actually a very solid return for the Yankees. We know that needed catching help, and while Alfonzo won't be ready this year, perhaps he can be an option in 2027.

Cruz is also a very intriguing piece for New York to have in its system moving forward.
