The New York Yankees have swung a last-minute trade deadline deal for a former All-Star.
The New York Yankees needed to add some bats before the MLB trade deadline, and they have done just that.
After landing Luis Garcia Jr. in a deal with the Washington Nationals on Sunday evening, the Yankees have now acquired outfielder Heliot Ramos from the San Francisco Giants, via Joel Sherman of The New York Post.
The Yankees are sending pitching prospect Henry Lalane as well as infielder Kaeden Kent to the Giants in return, per Sherman.
Ramos is slashing .264/.304/.424 with nine home runs and 34 RBI over 306 plate appearances this season.
The 26-year-old broke into the big leagues with the Giants in 2022, but only saw scarce playing time over his first couple of years. He then became a full-time starter in 2024 and earned himself an All-Star selection after slashing .256/.328/.400 with 22 homers and 72 RBI across 518 trips to the dish.
Ramos took a bit of a step back last season, posting a .728 OPS. He finished with 21 long balls and 69 RBI through 695 plate appearances.
He hasn't been incredibly impressive at the dish in 2026, either, but he is at least a more than serviceable bat who should help the Yankees' starving lineup.
A former first-round pick, Ramos was once a top prospect, although his defensive deficiencies are well-documented.
Of course, it will be interesting to see where Ramos plays.
Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger are both currently recovering from injury, and Trent Grisham is in center field. New York has also been using youngsters Spencer Jones and Jasson Dominguez in the outfield while the veterans have been sidelined.
For now, the Yanks just needed some offense, and Ramos should provide that.
The Yankees are also without Giancarlo Stanton, who has been on the shelf with a calf injury since late April.
Once everyone gets healthy, it will be interesting to see how New York puts things together. Garcia is a terrible defensive player, so you have to figure he will serve as designated hitter for now. Ramos surely won't stay in the outfield once Judge and Bellinger return.
Or is this a sign that Judge might not be back in 2026?
We'll see what happens, but it's clear that Brian Cashman made it a goal to acquire some bats before Monday's 6 p.m. cutoff, and he has done that.
It should also be noted that Ramos is under team control through 2029.
