The New York Yankees have one of the more intriguing outfield prospects in baseball with Spencer Jones, but despite his impressive power numbers, the 24-year-old has yet to make his MLB debut.

According to Jorge Castillo of ESPN, there are reasons why the organization has continued to keep the talented slugger in the minors.

Castillo recently noted that Jones remains well-regarded in the Yankees’ organization, but there’s currently another young outfielder ahead of him in the pecking order, which we knew.

“Jones is next on the organizational depth chart behind Jasson Domínguez,” Castillo wrote.

Because of that situation, Jones is widely expected to open the season at Triple-A despite his production in the minors. The outfielder is one of the top power hitters in the Yankees’ farm system and also offers strong defensive ability.

Castillo added that Jones has legitimate big league tools, including the ability to play elite defense and generate significant power at the plate.

“He turns 25 in May, has yet to make his major league debut, and is a virtual lock to begin the season in Triple-A. While he’s a true center fielder with some of the biggest pop in the minors — he slugged 35 home runs last season — Jones hasn’t debuted because he whiffs too much.”

The strikeout issue has continued to be the primary problem in Jones’ game. Despite his power, his swing-and-miss aspect has been difficult to ignore.

“He compiled 179 strikeouts last season after 200 in 2024,” Castillo continued. “His 35.4% strikeout rate last season would’ve ranked highest in the majors.”

Those numbers have impacted how evaluators view Jones as a prospect. Castillo explained that the strikeout concerns, combined with his age relative to other prospects, have caused him to fall off some top-100 prospect lists and hurt his trade value.

However, if Jones can improve his contact rate while maintaining his power, he could still be the guy the Yankees want one day. Only time will tell if that will be the case and if he gets a shot soon.

“But he should receive the call in 2026 — whether with the Yankees or another club — if he remains healthy.”
