We may have just seen the end of Jasson Dominguez's days with the New York Yankees.
The New York Yankees called up Jasson Dominguez earlier this month, giving the 23-year-old one last chance to prove himself this season.
But instead of boosting his status, Dominguez may have actually hurt it.
Dominguez went just 1-for-9 at the plate in limited action and committed a couple of awful errors in right field, with his most recent one against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night resulting in his demotion.
The outfielder slashed .225/.267/.368 with six home runs and 14 RBI over 222 plate appearances with the Yankees' big-league club this season, and with Spencer Jones crushing it in the majors, there really isn't any room for Dominguez going forward.
Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger have the corner outfield slots locked down. Jones will almost certainly be the starting center fielder in 2027. Heliot Ramos is under club control through 2029, so barring an offseason trade, he will be in the mix next year, as well.
Where does that leave Dominguez?
Probably on the trade block, as the former top prospect has not shown nearly enough during his time in the bigs to warrant New York keeping him beyond this season.
Dominguez made his MLB debut in 2023 and has slashed .241/.309/.388 across 751 trips to the dish ever since. That's good for a .697 OPS, and his defense has been horrendous throughout the entire time.
When Dominguez was coming up through the Yankees' minor-league system, he was billed as a five-tool player, with some even going as far to compare him to Mickey Mantle.
I'm not sure where any of that came from, because it's blatantly obvious watching Dominguez for five minutes that he is not a good defender. He also simply does not have the raw power to be anything more than a decent complementary piece offensively.
At this point, Dominguez's trade value has dipped considerably, but New York might as well trade him this winter before his stock drops any further.
Dominguez is long past the point where he can be a centerpiece in a blockbuster trade, but perhaps a team would view him as an intriguing extra piece in a deal.
One thing seems pretty certain, though: Dominguez probably just played his final game in pinstripes, and the Dominguez experiment in the Bronx never really got off the ground.
