Is Luis Gil a part of the New York Yankees' future?
The New York Yankees sent Luis Gil down to the minor leagues to start the 2026 MLB campaign because they were beginning the year with a four-man rotation.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone has revealed that Gil is expected to return to the big leagues against the Tampa Bay Rays on April 10, so Gil's "demotion" will be short lived.
While Gil's relegation was not a punishment, it was clearly an indication that the right-hander is pretty far down the totem pole on New York's staff ... and that's with both Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon both sidelined.
What will happen to Gil once Cole and Rodon return, which could be as soon as the end of the month?
Right now, the Yankees are rolling with Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers in their starting rotation. Weathers has been shaky, but his strikeout rate has been encouraging, and New York just traded four prospects — including prize outfielder Dillon Lewis — to acquire him back in January.
So does Gil actually have a future in the Bronx?
It seems pretty clear that the 27-year-old is the Yankees' No. 7 starter when everyone is healthy. Ergo, he won't be in the rotation when everyone is a full go. Does that mean he'll move to the bullpen? Will he get traded?

The bullpen could represent a potential avenue for Gil, but just how wise is it to use a pitcher with command issues in high-leverage situations when he could potentially be entering the game with men already on base?
Remember: the Yanks refused to include Gil in a trade for Kyle Tucker prior to the 2025 campaign, so teams have expressed interest in him in the past. Has he value dipped since then? Absolutely, but surely, there would be some clubs interested in acquiring the Dominican native.
Of course, we don't know how effective Cole and/or Rodon will be upon returning, and injuries can still happen, so it's nice to have some extra rotation depth. But again, where do you put Gil in the meantime?
It just seems hard to imagine Gil factoring into the Yankees' long-term plans at this point. Unless New York feels it could turn Gil into a dynamic reliever, a trade seems to be the most likely path for the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year.
