The New York Yankees started their 2026 MLB campaign right, defeating the San Francisco Giants by a score of 7-0 on Wednesday night.
Hopefully, it's the first of many wins for a Yankees squad that is aiming to win its first World Series championship since 2009.
And to be perfectly honest, looking at New York's roster and then surveying the rest of the American League, it's hard to imagine a better opportunity for the Yankees.
Examine the AL for a second. Outside of the Seattle Mariners, are there any teams that truly scare you?
Yes, the Toronto Blue Jays beat New York in the ALDS last year, but they lost Bo Bichette this offseason and didn't really replace him, and you kind of get the feeling they were playing a bit over their heads in 2025, anyway.
The Boston Red Sox beefed up their pitching staff and added Willson Contreras, but they saw Alex Bregman bolt for the Chicago Cubs.
Sure, a team could emerge from the AL Central, but the Yanks tend to handle that division incredibly well.

New York will be getting Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon back at some point over the first couple of months of the season. They will join a starting rotation that already includes Max Fried and Cam Schlittler. Talk about dynamic.
I do think the bullpen remains a question mark, but the Yankees have always seemed to manage to piece together strong pens over the year.
And as far as the lineup? So long as New York's top sluggers can stay on the field, you can't really find another club that can match the Yankees' hitters blow for blow.
It's also important to keep in mind that New York can always adjust on the fly. If it feels it needs another arm or another bat, it can always make a move before the trade deadline, and the Yanks certainly have the prospects to do it.
The only thing stopping the Yankees from making a run to the Fall Classic this year is themselves, whether that be because of bad health or sloppy play in general.
Fans have been irritated by New York's decision to run it back, and understandably so. But this does look like a new and improved version of last year's team, especially once the pitching staff gets healthy.
The Yankees have an absolutely golden opportunity in front of them right now, and with yet another year ticking off of Aaron Judge's prime, they cannot waste it.
