The New York Yankees have a major problem at the catcher position, but it might not be solvable this year.
By now, you know that the production the New York Yankees have gotten from the catcher position this year has been absolutely unacceptable.
Austin Wells is batting .158 with a .511 OPS. J.C. Escarra was nearly an automatic out before being demoted to the minor leagues. Ali Sanchez is a career journeyman with no offensive game to speak of.
The obvious thought is that the Yankees will acquire an upgrade at catcher by the MLB trade deadline, with names like Ryan Jeffers and Hunter Goodman being floated as possibilities.
But not only may none of New York's top potential targets be available for one reason or another, but landing a new starting backstop during the second half of the season has major implications that fans may be neglecting to acknowledge.
I am all for upgrading from Wells. I have been one of his biggest critics for more than a year now. But it's not so simple as swapping out Wells for another catcher.

It's also about the pitching staff, and bringing in a new No. 1 catcher means that the Yankees' pitchers will have to go through quite an adjustment period midway through the campaign.
This is why big-name catchers are rarely traded midseason.
The idea of Jeffers or Goodman is obviously tempting. Shea Langeliers is an intriguing target, as well. But just how realistic is it?
I definitely think New York will find another backstop somewhere, but I have my doubt that the Yanks will make a major move behind the plate.
Perhaps going out and landing someone like Christian Vazquez will be the move the Yankees make. He is a right-handed catcher who can platoon with Wells, and at least this year, he has been superior offensively (although not by a ton).
New York will more properly address its catching situation over the winter. For now, though, the Yankees may be forced to go the cheap route.
Again, as much as everyone would love to get Wells out of the lineup, it may not be all that plausible in 2026.
