New York Yankees fans have been hoping all winter that their team would swing a big trade for a starting pitcher like Milwaukee Brewers star Freddy Peralta, but that might not happen.
In fact, the Yankees might not complete a trade for a pitcher at all.
They may, however, sign one on the free-agent market, and Jon Morosi of MLB.com has revealed that New York is searching more for ancillary pieces rather than frontline arms.
"They're probably looking more for the depth names," Morosi said on The Insiders. "Names like Lucas Giolito ... I hesitate to call someone like Zac Gallen depth, but it's more of the No. 3 starters or below."
While Morosi added that he would be "stunned" if the Yankees didn't add another starter this offseason, this is certainly not the update New York fans wanted to hear.
The Yankees already watched as the Chicago Cubs acquired Edward Cabrera, and if Morosi is correct, New York won't be adding Peralta or Washington Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore, either.
To be fair, Giolito did post a 3.41 ERA over 26 starts with the Boston Red Sox in 2025, but his peripherals weren't very encouraging.

It's not like Gallen is ancient, either, as he is just 30 years old.
Of course, the issue with Gallen is the price. It seems hard to imagine that the Yankees — who are closely monitoring their payroll — would pay the cost it would take to acquire the righty. That is, of course, unless New York doesn't re-sign Cody Bellinger, which is a distinct possibility.
Regardless, the dream of the Yanks trading for Peralta may be fading. The Brewers are surely asking a lot in return for the two-time All-Star, and the Yankees are notoriously stingy when it comes to their prospects.
New York has done absolutely nothing of significance this winter, and fans are past the point of losing patience.
Maybe Brian Cashman will ultimately deliver a surprise, but it's looking more and more like no major moves will be coming this offseason.
