New York Yankees Infielder Likely Done in the Bronx cover image

This New York Yankees infielder has probably seen his time in the Bronx come to a close.

The New York Yankees' infield is rather crowded heading into 2026, and that's even with shortstop Anthony Volpe recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

Jose Caballero will start in Volpe's place, but bench players like Oswaldo Cabrera (who is returning from a major injury himself) and Amed Rosario will also get some playing time. Heck, we might even see Paul DeJong get a shot.

So what does this mean for Jorbit Vivas, the 24-year-old who actually played 29 games with the Yankees' big-league club last season?

Vivas played both second and third base for New York in 2025, slashing .161/.266/.250 with a home run and five RBI over 66 plate appearances.

He certainly didn't hit as well as he did in the minors, where he owns a lifetime .271/.378/.404 slash line. Sure, the power isn't there, but Vivas' ability to get on base is impressive, and his 12.3 percent strikeout rate is impressive.

So could Vivas get another chance with New York this spring?

Well, here's the problem: the 24-year-old is on the 40-man roster, but he is out of options. That means the Yankees can't just send him down to Triple-A in a roster crunch; he would have to be exposed to waivers, where they would likely lose him.

"If the Yankees believe Vivas’ Triple-A discipline is the real deal, they might have to make a painful cut elsewhere to keep him. If not, Vivas’s time in pinstripes could end before it truly begins," wrote Alexander Wilson of Empire Sports Media.

The chances of Vivas making the Opening Day roster seem incredibly slim. Barring an injury to Rosario or Cabrera, the lefty hitter is probably getting cut, and you would also have to think that even DeJong would be ahead of him in the pecking order.

So while Vivas does fit the profile of what New York has been looking for, a patient hitter who makes contact, it doesn't even look like he will get an opportunity in the Bronx this coming season.

It should also be noted that the Yankees are apparently looking for another right-handed bat, which would further decrease the probability of Vivas making the team out of Spring Training.

Vivas is probably done with the Bronx Bombers.
