The New York Yankees should avoid going down this road.

The New York Yankees absolutely need to shore up their bullpen before the MLB trade deadline. That much is obvious.

But just how far should the Yankees actually go?

Right now, San Diego Padres closer Mason Miller is the hot name in the Bronx. The Padres are apparently open to trading him, and New York has been tabbed as one of the top potential destinations for the right-hander.

But would such a deal actually be wise for the Yankees?

Miller has been dominant this season. He owns a 0.86 ERA and an even more ridiculous 0.51 FIP. He also boasts a 0.864 WHIP while averaging 16.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

Yes, those numbers are totally real. There are no typos there.

Miller has been the best reliever in baseball in 2026, so there will be quite a feeding frenzy if San Diego is very serious about moving him before Aug. 3.

New York, however, should avoid a bidding war.

For as terrific as Miller has been this year, he's a reliever, and relief pitchers are generally always volatile.

For example, Miller owns a lifetime 2.41 ERA. Still terrific? Of course. But is that in line with what we have seen from him this season? No.

The 27-year-old is also under club control through 2029, meaning the Padres can ask for the world in return for him. They absolutely do not have to trade him now. He is a cheap player under contract for the next several years. Why rush?

In order for the Yankees to net Miller, they would have to give up Carlos Lagrange, one of Spencer Jones or Jasson Dominguez and then some. I'm not sure that's worth it for someone who throws 60 innings annually.

Couple that with the fact that Miller recently alluded to not being a huge fan of the idea of pitching in New York, and the Yanks should be having pretty legitimate questions about making a hot pursuit of the former third-round pick.

Should the Yankees place a call to San Diego? Of course. It never hurts to gauge the market, and perhaps the Padres' asking price won't be as high as you think. That seems doubtful, but you never know.

If San Diego does, in fact, ask for a king's ransom in return (and it will), New York should make the smart decision and walk away.

There are plenty of other relief pitchers the Yankees can attempt to acquire over these next couple of weeks, and it wouldn't require selling the farm to do so.

Miller is an outstanding pitcher and a tantalizing potential addition, but the cost of capital it would take to land him is just too much to bear.
