The New York Yankees swung a surprising trade over the winter, acquiring pitcher Ryan Weathers in a deal with the Miami Marlins.
The Yankees sent four prospects — including highly-regarded outfielder Dillon Lewis — to the Marlins in exchange for Weathers, so clearly, New York liked the left-hander.
Weathers has flashed impressive stuff for the Yankees this spring and is on track to land a spot in the team's starting rotation to begin the 2026 campaign, particularly with both Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon sidelined to start the year.
A major-league scout who follows the Bronx Bombers recently offered his own take on Weathers, and while he raved about the 26-year-old, he also dropped a rather odd remark in his assessment.
"When the Yankees traded for Weathers in the winter, my first thought, 'This was a damn good pickup,'" the scout said, via Randy Miller of NJ.com. "I followed Weathers when he was in the Marlins’ system and he’s always had great stuff. I’ve always been a big fan."
So, what's so strange about the scout's comment? Well, Weathers was never actually in Miami's "system." The Marlins landed him in a trade with the San Diego Padres midway through 2023, and he was either in Miami's rotation or on the injured list afterward.

Weathers has actually been a disappointment thus far in his big-league career. He was selected by the Padres with the seventh overall pick of the 2018 MLB Draft and made his major-league debut in 2021, where he struggled mightily.
In fact, across 43 outings and 29 starts in San Diego, the Loretto, Tn. native pitched to the tune of a 5.73 ERA, 5.53 FIP and 1.490 WHIP.
Weathers definitely cleaned things up a bit with the Marlins, logging a 4.11 ERA through 27 appearances and 26 starts. His most productive campaign came in 2024, when he posted a 3.63 ERA and 1.177 WHIP over 86.2 innings of work.
Injuries derailed Weathers during his days in Miami, as he made just 24 starts over his final two seasons with the club. Also, in spite of having tremendous velocity on his fastball, he averaged just 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings in South Florida.
There is no question, though, that Weathers has talent, and perhaps the Yankees can bring the best out of him this season.
