The New York Yankees have received a major update on their top prospect.

New York Yankees prospect George Lombard Jr. entered 2026 with some serious questions. Yes, he was promoted to Double-A last season, but he struggled mightily at the plate, which had some wondering if his bat would ever be good enough.

Well, this spring, Lombard quickly answered those questions, slashing .312/.400/.571 with four home runs and 10 RBI in Double-A, earning himself a promotion to Triple-A.

Since being elevated, Lombard's offensive struggles have returned, as he is hitting only .185 with no homers in eight games, but growing pains are expected.

And even with Lombard going into a bit of a slump at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Baseball America was apparently markedly impressed with what he achieved in Somerset.

Lombard went into the season ranked 45th on Baseball America's top-100 prospect list, but he has since made a major jump, moving up 30 spots to No. 15 in the publication's updated rankings.

That is a major move for Lombard, who could potentially challenge for a big-league roster spot later on in the year (although his more likely time of arrival is probably next season).

Lombard's rise could not come at a better time with the Yankees searching for long-term answers at shortstop.

Anthony Volpe underwent shoulder surgery during the offseason and was optioned down to Triple-A earlier in the week even after completing a rehab assignment, so clearly, New York is a bit disenchanted with him.

Jose Caballero is manning shortstop for now and has been playing very well, but at his best, Caballero is a super utilityman capable of playing basically any position. It seems hard to imagine the Yankees view him as their solution at short.

Enter Lombard, who is still just 20 years old and clearly needs some time to grow, but flashed terrific potential in Spring Training and has continued to do so in New York's minor-league system this year.

While Lombard's offense is still a work in progress, he is an outstanding defender and appears to be capable of playing various infield positions, as the Yanks are now in the process of moving him all around the diamond.

Remember: Jazz Chisholm is slated to hit free agency next winter, so the Yankees could promote Lombard in 2027 and have him and Volpe man the middle of the infield.

Lombard's meteoric rise in Baseball America's newest rankings is definitely exciting news for New York, especially given Volpe's struggles.
