New York Yankees Roundtable Podcast, Ep. 12: Cody Bellinger Returns cover image

Matthew Schmidt and Jon Conahan of New York Yankees Roundtable discussed what's left for the Yankees to do this offseason during the latest episode of the Yankees Roundtable Podcast, and smack dab in the middle of recording, Cody Bellinger re-signed.

The New York Yankees' offseason path suddenly became considerably more clear now that Cody Bellinger has re-signed, but there is still work to do.

The Yankees are exploring the trade market and are further seeking to upgrade their starting rotation, even after acquiring Ryan Weathers from the Miami Marlins.

Plus, New York will need to add at least one bullpen arm after losing Devin Williams and Luke Weaver to free agency.

Getting Bellinger back, however, definitely makes things easier, and the Yankees officially re-signed him smack dab in the middle of the Yankees Roundtable Podcast.

Matthew Schmidt and Jon Conahan discussed the move live among a bunch of other Yankees-related topics in the most recent episode of the show.

The topics are as follows:

  • Bellinger appeared to lose all leverage once the New York Mets traded for Luis Robert. The former NL MVP was almost always going to stay in the Bronx, and once the Mets bowed out, Bellinger's return to the Yankees seemed even more obvious.
  • With Bellinger now back in the fold, things will shift to Freddy Peralta, whom New York has been targeting in a trade. The Yanks now seem more likely to move one of Jasson Dominguez or Spencer Jones in a deal for Peralta now that Bellinger is locked up for the future.
  • So what about the Weathers trade? Why exactly did the Yankees make this deal if they knew they were going to pursue Peralta anyway? What is New York planning? Will one of Luis Gil or Will Warren be dealt? Will Weathers be moved to the bullpen?
  • Harrison Bader was discussed as a potential option in the event that Bellinger bolted, but keep in mind that Bellinger signed during the middle of this podcast. Regardless, Bader was never really too enticing of an option anyway.
  • What should we make of the rest of the AL East? Where do the Yankees stand after keeping Bellinger? Are they above the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox? Are they on par? Are the Baltimore Orioles a sleeper? And would New York become the clear favorite if it acquires Peralta?

All that and more in the newest episode of the Yankees Roundtable podcast.
