New York Yankees Skipper Doesn't Hold Back About Anthony Volpe cover image

Aaron Boone took some time to speak out about New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe.

Just a couple of short years ago, the New York Yankees felt that they had a rising potential superstar in young shortstop Anthony Volpe.

That could still be the case, but fans have grown frustrated with Volpe already. He has not gotten off to the dynamic start to his MLB career that fans were expecting from him. Some of those fans have already turned on him.

At just 24 years old, Volpe has played at the Major League level for the past three years. He has given the Yankees flashes of star potential, but there have also been low moments that have caused some to lose faith in him.

Despite the outside noise, it is very clear that New York manager Aaron Boone still believes in his young shortstop.

In an appearance on the New York Post podcast with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman, Boone made his thoughts about Volpe crystal clear.

"I think he's really talented. Obviously, a first-round pick for us out of high school. Kind of got through the system fairly quickly for a high school middle infielder. Hit his way up here. Has hit in the big leagues," Boone said.

"He's just had a lot of valleys too, to where the numbers aren't what we expect them to be — what he expects them to be over the long haul," he continued. "This game is filled with talented people, where it's not always linear. It's said a lot, but it's very true. People's journeys and tracks to become finished products are different a lot of times. You want your highly touted guys or guys talked about or high draft picks that get to the big leagues and bloom, it just takes off, and they're all stars, and they run with it."

Those comments should help some fans relax a bit. Volpe is developing and getting better, even if it is taking him longer than originally expected.

During the 2025 MLB season with the Yankees, Volpe played in 153 games. He hit 19 home runs to go along with 72 RBI, while also swiping 18 bases and slashing .212/.272/.391. His defense was average as well, recording 19 errors throughout the year.

While there are some reasons to be discouraged about the shortstop, he's still very young. There is plenty of time for Volpe to find his footing and figure things out.

Only time will tell whether or not he's able to do that, but the future is still bright for him. New York fans should be a bit more patient with Volpe before making a final call about his MLB future.
