Luis Garcia Jr. has been terrific for the New York Yankees, but he is still a dilemma for the club.
When the New York Yankees acquired first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. at the MLB trade deadline, many people were confused.
How exactly did the Yankees plan on fitting Garcia into a lineup that already featured Ben Rice at first base and a returning Giancarlo Stanton?
Well, obviously, the Stanton concern answered itself, as the slugger is now likely out for the remainder of the season. But Stanton's injury does not change the fact that the Garcia fit is still awkward moving forward.
Yes, Garcia has been very impressive since arriving in the Bronx, slashing .289/.337/.539 with five home runs and 11 RBI over 83 plate appearances. He has also done a pretty fine job over at first base, essentially relegating Rice into a DH role.
But what about next season?
Stanton's future with the club is obviously murky given his injury history, but with 2027 representing the last guaranteed year on his contract (he has a club option for 2028), you kind of get the feeling the Yankees may want to see his last year through.
And why not? It's clear that Stanton can still rake when healthy, and he might just need an offseason to get back to full strength.
So what will New York do with Garcia?
The Yanks can't run a platoon with Stanton and Rice at DH. That isn't happening. And it seems pretty clear they prefer Garcia over Rice in the field, and for obvious reasons.
I suppose the Yankees can cut ties with Stanton at year's end, but even then, they would probably like to leave the DH slot open for Aaron Judge, or perhaps even Heliot Ramos (although I do think Ramos will be a trade candidate this winter).
Garcia has played both second base and shortstop before, although he was awful at both spots. Do they dare try him at third base?
Ryan McMahon is under contract through next season, but New York has surely grown tired of having his bat in the starting lineup. The Yanks could try and work with Garcia at the hot corner during the offseason, shift him over there next spring and then have McMahon serve as a defensive piece off the bench.
Garcia himself could also represent a potential trade chip given that 2027 is his final year of club control, so that's another option. Yes, the 26-year-old has been great this season, owning an .874 OPS, but he is a lifetime .269/.302/.435 hitter. The Yankees may choose to sell high on his bat.
One final scenario is putting Rice behind the plate and either ditching Austin Wells or making him the backup. New York would then be able to put Garcia at first base with no issues, and the DH slot would remain open for Stanton, Judge, Ramos or whoever else.
The issue there is Rice is a subpar defensive backstop, and there are also concerns as to whether or not his offense would hold up playing catcher full time.
Right now, the Yankees are simply enjoying Garcia's production, and watching him hit with that short right-field porch has certainly been fun. But there is no question that they will be faced with quite a dilemma regarding the New York native in a few months.
