President Trump Embraces Yankees, Steinbrenners Before Game vs. Tigers cover image

On the 24th anniversary of 9/11, President Donald Trump attended the Yankees vs. Tigers game at Yankee Stadium, with First Lady Melania.

Every year on 9/11 the President of the United States will always be in New York to pay their respects to those that lost their lives in the tragic World Trade Center attacks.

Trump was no different, and after attending the ceremony to honor the fallen and visiting the 9/11 Memorial, he and Melania planned to attend Thursday night’s Yankee game.

Thirty minutes prior to first pitch, Trump made a special visit to the Yankees locker room offering high praise for the Steinbrenner family and encouraging the team in his usual boisterous fashion.

"[The Steinbrenners] are a great family. [Team President] Randy [Levine] is wonderful, and I will say, you’re gonna win. George [Steinbrenner] used to for some reason. I don’t know what it was, we won every time I came. Every time I came, we’d win a game. If you think that was easy, sitting with him for a game, it wasn’t. It was brutal. We were exhausted at the end. But we won, and you’re going to win. You’re gonna go all the way. Can you get in the playoff? I think. How about tonight? We start tonight, and you’re gonna do well.”

Ultimately, Trump’s prophecy came true, as the Yankees pulled out a 9-3 win in front of the home crowd.

He then ended up shaking everyone’s hand in the locker room, seemingly embracing certain players like Anthony Volpe, and Aaron Judge.

He joked with Judge as he shook his hand:

“I wish he was a little bit bigger,” as the locker room laughed. "If you have that much muscle, you have to hit the ball further. You’re a fantastic player, unbelievable player, thank you."

Judge took those comments to heart, after he crushed two home runs, which ended up tying Joe DiMaggio for fourth place in Yankees history.

It’s a situation that we rarely see from someone who’s a sitting President. Former President Barack Obama had attended a Washington Wizards game at one point while still in office, but you rarely see a sitting President enter the locker room and meet all the players.

Other than that, it’s usually the champions of any major sport to visit the White House whenever they’re on a road trip to Washington D.C.

After finishing the series against the Tigers, the Yankees go into Boston to square off against their longtime rival Red Sox, who are only a half-game behind the Yankees in the American League East.

First pitch tomorrow will take place at Fenway Park at 7:10 p.m. ET.
