Since 2022, New York Yankees fans have been hearing about Spencer Jones, the towering outfield prospect who could be the second coming of Aaron Judge.
However, Jones has stalled a bit longer than most initially anticipated.
After a torrid brief debut in the Yankees' minor-league system in 2022, Jones posted sub-.800 OPSes in 2023 and 2024, the latter of which featured a 200-strikeout showing.
Jones' tepid pace had everyone wondering if he would ultimately end up a disappointment, which put a massive burden on his shoulders heading into 2025.
But then, the Vanderbilt product smashed 35 home runs in a breakout campaign between Double-A and Triple-A. Even if Jones fell off most top-100 prospect lists, the prodigious power he displayed last season was tantalizing.
Now, here we are in February 2026, and Jones is less than three month away from turning 25. The clock is ticking for the former first-round draft pick, and with the Yankees' outfield being set, Jones almost certainly won't be making the big-league roster to start the regular season.
The 6-foot-7 slugger needs regular reps, and he simply wouldn't get that as a fourth outfielder. But Jones' path to the majors may be simpler than you may think.
We know that Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger have the corner slots locked up, but what about Trent Grisham in center field?

Yes, he hit 34 homers with an .811 OPS last season, but he is a lifetime .218/.321/.400 hitter who batted under .200 in the preceding three campaigns before his breakthrough.
Maybe Grisham was a late bloomer and is actually for real, but there stands a real chance that he could regress back to the mean this spring. If that occurs, Jones would have a legitimate shot of stealing the starting center field job.
Jones is a terrific defender with tremendous speed. Unlike Jasson Dominguez, who was a disaster in left field last year, Jones is an elite glove at all three outfield positions and is able to cover vast ground thanks to his long stride and athleticism.
The strikeout problem still exists and probably always will for the hulking lefty, but imagine how well Jones' power could play with the short right-field porch at Yankee Stadium?
There is reason to be skeptical about Jones. He is really old for a prospect, and it's pretty clear that scouts around baseball are no longer enamored with him. The Yankees themselves might even be a bit disappointed in his progression.
But remember: there was even a time when Judge began losing steam in New York's farm system, which was why he didn't make his major-league debut until he was 24 years old himself (and his initial showing in 2016 was horrific).
Perhaps Jones, like Judge, just needs an opportunity. And he may stand a good chance of getting it this season.
