The New York Yankees were just swept by the Tampa Bay Rays and have now lost five straight games overall to fall to 8-7 on the season, as many of the same issues that plagued the Yankees last year have reared their ugly heads in 2026, as well.
Bullpen. Poor lineup depth. A lack of timely hitting. An inability to manufacture runs.
These are all problems New York faced in 2025, and thanks to Brian Cashman largely standing during the offseason, surprise surprise, the problems still exist.
The Yankees watched as the Rays put on a small ball clinic on Sunday, laying down bunts, utilizing speed and actually getting hits with runners in scoring position. Those are all things New York has long had difficulty doing.
Am I advising that the Yanks start bunting regularly? No, but the fact that the Yankees seem almost incapable of generating runs without the long ball remains concerning.
New York has plenty of starpower. Aaron Judge. Giancarlo Stanton. Cody Bellinger. Ben Rice is on his way there, too. But once you get into the lower half of the order, you tend to roll your eyes if you're a Yankees fan.
And as far as the latter innings are concerned? It's hard to be confident, especially with this bullpen.

But it's becoming increasingly obvious that this Yankees ballclub is not a serious World Series team. Not as currently constructed.
Does New York have some pieces in place? Absolutely. But the Bronx Bombers feel rather incomplete as a team. We saw that last October when they lost to the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS. We also saw it two years ago when they fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Fall Classic.
Too many holes exist here, and there really is no easy fix in sight.
Some feel that recalling Jasson Dominguez could save the day, but there is a reason the Yankees signed Randal Grichuk and sent Dominguez to Triple-A. They simply do not trust his defense in left field, and understandably so.
It's still very early in the campaign, so there is plenty of time for New York to right the ship. But let's be honest: if you have been watching the team in its current iteration for any length of time, you know the warning signs.
Right now, they're flashing all over the place.
