The New York Yankees have swung a trade with a hated rival to acquire a compelling pitcher.

The New York Yankees are in dire need of bullpen help, and on Sunday, they swung a trade in an attempt to address the problem.

The Yankees have completed a deal with the Houston Astros, sending infielder Braden Shewmake to the Astros in exchange for relief pitcher Wilmy Sanchez.

Shewmake is 28 years old and has been with New York's organization since last year, but has never gotten a chance to play for the Yankees' big-league squad. Given the depth New York has in its infield, he almost certainly never would have.

Sanchez, on the other hand, is an intriguing prospect.

Still just 22 years old, the right-hander pitched to the tune of a 1.29 ERA in five appearances for Houston's Double-A affiliate this season, allowing three hits while registering eight strikeouts over seven innings of work.

Sanchez had been in the Astros' farm system since 2022 and has averaged 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings throughout his career.

The biggest drawback for the Dominican native has been his lack of control, as he owns a lifetime 5.9 BB/9. Last season, he walked 51 batters across 61 frames, which was the primary factor behind his unsightly 6.05 ERA.

However, Sanchez has dynamic stuff, and if the Yankees can ever harness his command, he could develop into quite a weapon in the bullpen.

New York's bullpen has been a major source of contention thus far in 2026. David Bednar has labored in the closer role, and middle relievers Camilo Doval and Fernando Cruz have run into trouble.

The Yanks also sent Jake Bird down to Triple-A because he was struggling so much over the first couple of weeks of the campaign.

Sanchez almost certainly won't be ready to help the Bronx Bombers immediately, but if he is able to cut down on the free passes and continues fanning hitters at such an elite clip, he could ultimately be a factor for the team at some point this season.

The Yankees are typically pretty good at identifying good relief arms, so perhaps they hit a diamond in the rough with Sanchez. And if not? It's not like they gave up anything valuable in exchange for him.
