The New York Yankees are interested in trading for Adley Rutschman, but is it worth it for them?
The New York Yankees desperately need a catcher. We all know this. Austin Wells has been an abomination this season, and the Yankees don't have any other feasible internal options.
New York is scouring the market for answers before the MLB trade deadline, and while Hunter Goodman is probably out of the question, one name that has surfaced as a potential target for the Yankees is Baltimore Orioles standout Adley Rutschman.
The Yanks have apparently called the Orioles about Rutschman, and ESPN's Jeff Passan even went as far to label New York the landing spot for the former first-round pick.
But would such a deal actually be worth it for the Yankees?
Not to take anything away from Rutschman. He's a fine player. Through 284 plate appearances this season, he is slashing .251/.331/.433 with eight home runs and 47 RBI. Right now, he is on the injured list due to a wrist issue. He is supposed to return sometime this month, but this marks his third stint on the IL in 2026.
Such has been the case for Rutschman the last couple of years. He played in just 90 games in 2025, and he has appeared in a grand total of 67 contests here this season.

He posted a .709 OPS in 2024 and a .673 OPS last year before having a bit of a bounceback showing in 2026, but there is no question his offensive production has dipped over the last few seasons.
Rutschman is elite defensively, so that compensates for his dip in output at the dish, but the problem is that the cost to acquire the former top prospect will surely be extravagant for the Yankees.
The Orioles are not going to gift Rutschman to their AL East rivals. If New York is able to pry Rutschman away from Camden Yards, it will be because it surrendered a gargantuan package to Baltimore in return.
Rutschman is slated to hit free agency after 2027, so it's not like the Yankees would have a ton of club control remaining if they acquired him, and who knows what the MLB landscape will look like with the impending labor stoppage.
Is Rutschman valuable enough to spend that type of capital on? If he were playing for a team outside the AL East, I would be more amenable to the move, because the cost of acquisition would naturally be lower. But that's not the situation.
New York needs a backstop. That is unquestionable. But I'm not so sure that Rutschman is the right answer given all of the other variables at play.
