As we look at some of the New York Yankees' decisions over the past few years, it's definitely fair to question the front office for not moving on from Anthony Volpe, Jasson Dominguez, and even Spencer Jones.
This is a team that's obviously had a chance to win a World Series, and while I understand that you always want young talent in Major League Baseball, the idea should have been to put the best baseball team on the field.
Unfortunately, the Yankees prospect-hugged way too many guys, and as a result, players like Volpe, Dominguez, and Jones aren't even really in the mix. After the decision to option Volpe on Sunday, there are some questions about what his future looks like. It remains uncertain when he'll get called up, but there seems to be an expectation that he'll have another chance to show his worth at the highest level.
“The expectation is that Volpe will return to the major league roster at some point this season, likely when his numbers in Triple-A reflect the player he’s capable of being. Whether that’s in two weeks or six weeks, the Yankees aren’t going to rush it. They have a shortstop who is holding the job down, a rotation that is about to get two of its best arms back, and a 23-9 record that says everything is working well enough without forcing a change.
“Boone made the patient decision. Given everything in front of him, it was the only decision that made sense,” Alexander Wilson of Empire Sports Media wrote.
As Wilson touched on, it's almost unfair to even get upset with the Yankees for this decision. If anything, we should be looking at what the Yankees didn't do in the past and get mad about that. However, considering how well the team is playing at this exact moment, there really is no reason to mess that up. Jose Caballero also deserves a chance to continue to play, so that's exactly what's going to happen.
