SNY’s Andy Martino reported that prior to the MLB Trade Deadline, the Yankees and Mets were discussing swapping outfielder Trent Grisham for third baseman Brett Baty.
There’s always been a contentious history between both franchises, more so from the fanbases. The Mets haven’t had nearly the success that the Yankees have had, and they’ve also undergone a tremendous amount of bad luck throughout as well.
Previous Mets owner Fred Wilpon wasn’t too fond of them either, not wanting to deal with the Yankees unless it was completely necessary. Since 2004, there have only been four transactions between both teams – with one of them being under the regime of new owner Steve Cohen.
So there’s been more of an openness to trade with the Bronx Bombers, especially this past season.
The Yankees and Mets were essentially in a totally different position prior to the All Star Game. The Mets were one of the better teams in the National League, and the Yankees were figuring out if they should go into sell-mode, or attempt to buy to make a playoff run.
The Mets wanted a rental center fielder who can help chip in, and the Yankees were wanting someone more of a team-controlled corner-infielder.
To this day, situations are the complete opposite. Ryan McMahon of the Rockies turned out to be the target for the Yankees, and the Mets settled on Cedric Mullins.
The Mets’ playoff lives are hanging by a thread, and the Yankees recently clinched a playoff berth.
Grisham found his way to the Bronx, ironically in the Juan Soto trade. Originally with the San Diego Padres for four seasons, the veteran would ship off across the country.
The expectations for him were low. He never hit over 20 home runs in his career prior to this season, and sub-.230 average throughout his career.
And in his first season, those low expectations were met, batting under .200 and struggling to find his power.
One season later though, and Grisham is having a career best season with the Yankees with 34 home runs and 74 RBIs while batting .238.
In regards to Baty, he's more of an unproven commodity. He was a former top-10 pick for the Mets, and has shown an aptitude for power, hitting a career high 18 home runs so far this season as a 25-year old.
Despite Grisham proving to be a quality power hitter this season, this could’ve worked out tremendously for the Yankees. Baty, who bats left-handed, could’ve been a tremendous asset for them in the notoriously hitter-friendly park, Yankee Stadium.
Baty has shown that improvement is well on the way, and if he found his way into pinstripes, it could’ve done wonders for his career.
Regardless, it worked out for the Yankees, since Grisham has hit 16 home runs for 24 RBIs, and now they’re battling for the American League East.
