New York Yankees pitcher Elmer Rodriguez is back, but he could be auditioning for something else entirely.

The New York Yankees have placed Max Fried on the 15-day injured list as a result of a bone bruise in his left elbow, so there was an open spot in the rotation.

Instead of simply rolling with Ryan Yarbrough as a starter like the Yankees did for much of last season, they decided to recall Elmer Rodriguez, who made a pair of big-league starts for the club a couple of weeks ago after Luis Gil was demoted.

Rodriguez did not look all that impressive in his first two outings, allowing five runs on 10 hits over 8.2 innings of work, issuing eight walks.

Of course, it's hard to judge the 22-year-old too much from just two appearances, but there is no question Rodriguez needs to show much better poise this time around.

And you know what? He isn't just auditioning for an eventual role in New York's starting rotation. He is also showcasing himself for a potential trade.

The Yankees are loaded with pitching talent in their minor-league system. Carlos Lagrange and Ben Hess are their other two top young arms along with Rodriguez, but they have plenty of depth there, as well.

The chances of New York keeping all of those hurlers are slim to none, and it stands to reason that one of them could be dealt before the trade deadline this summer.

Could it be Rodriguez?

The right-hander has certainly been terrific in Triple-A, owning a 1.38 ERA and 1.038 WHIP across his first five starts in 2026. He also owns a lifetime 2.50 ERA over five minor-league campaigns between the Boston Red Sox and the Yanks.

There is no question he is a highly valued prospect, so he would have no shortage of interested teams between now and Aug. 3 if the Yankees consider moving him.

New York has some very clear needs that must be addressed in the coming months. It needs bullpen help, and it could use another bat. You can bet that rival clubs will be asking about Rodriguez in trade discussions.

Brian Cashman is notoriously stingy with his prospects, but with the Yankees' window closing in their current state (Aaron Judge is already 34 years old), he might be more willing to part with them this time around.

Rodriguez has a great chance to build his trade value here, and while that certainly isn't his goal, New York certainly wouldn't mind.

There is no easy path to the Yankees' starting rotation for Rodriguez in the near future, either, so perhaps a trade would ultimately be best for both sides.

That being said, we'll have to see how Rodriguez handles this new opportunity.
