The New York Yankees fell to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2 of the ALDS despite Cam Schlittler taking the mound.

The New York Yankees fell 5-2 to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2 of the ALDS. The Yankees were hopeful heading into the game, with AL Cy Young favorite Cam Schlittler taking the mound.

However, Schlittler didn't have his best performance, going 4.1 innings and allowing six hits, a walk, four runs, and two earned runs. New York's poor defense was on display in the bottom of the 1st, as Yandy Díaz reached first on a throwing error by Ryan McMahon. Jonathan Aranda then singled, advancing Díaz to second.

Schlittler then got Junior Caminero to ground out, but a Jazz Chisholm Jr. throwing error scored Díaz, giving the Rays a 1-0 lead.

Ben Rice tied the game up in the top of the 4th, blasting a solo home run to right field. In the bottom of the 5th, everything went wrong for the Yankees. Aranda singled, which was followed up by a Caminero double. Liam Hicks then grounded out, scoring Aranda, and Chandler Simpson grounded out a player later, scoring Caminero.

Rice tried to ignite a rally for the Yankees in the top of the 8th, as he homered to right for the second time in the game, but he provided the only offense for the team.

New York will now face elimination in Game 3 as they head back home. Max Fried will be on the mound for the Yankees up against Nick Martinez. Fried had a strong 2026 season, posting a 2.80 ERA, 104 strikeouts, and a 0.99 WHIP over 20 games.

Fried also pitched well in the AL Wild Card Series, as he went six innings, allowing three hits, a walk, and an earned run. The Yankees will need another start like this to give them a chance to get back in the series.

They will be facing off against Martinez, who pitched well in the regular season, posting a 3.10 ERA with 109 strikeouts and a 1.09 WHIP.

The Rays have played cleaner baseball, which has led to their 2-0 lead in the series. New York's four errors will be costly, and they will need to play better on defense and score more runs to have a shot at advancing to the ALCS.
