The New York Yankees have been given brutal news on the hamstring injury to outfielder Trent Grisham.
With just a few weeks left to go until the playoffs begin, the New York Yankees have received some tough news on outfielder Trent Grisham.
Grisham suffered a hamstring injury recently, but the team didn't know the extent of the issue. But now, it seems that New York could lose the outfielder for the rest of the regular season.
According to Yankees insider Chris Kirschner, Grisham has a Grade 2 hamstring strain. This would leave him out for weeks, adding insult to injury to the Yankees' problems.
New York has been playing without star outfielder Aaron Judge for months, so this injury to Grisham is a tough one. Grisham has underperformed this year, but he provided the team with some needed depth.
So far this season, Grisham has slashed .211/.308/.395 with 18 home runs and 59 RBIs. His production has dropped from last year when Grisham posted an OPS of .811 with 34 home runs.
New York gave him a $22 million qualifying offer after this performance, but he hasn't been able to live up to the expectations. Grisham first came to the Yankees in the massive trade that also landed them Juan Soto a few years ago.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone is hopeful that Grisham can return this season, but it all depends on how his body reacts to recovery.
“I know [Grisham] was already moving around, doing stuff today,” Boone said. “It feels like he felt a little bit better today than when he did it a couple of months ago. It’s in a different spot, so we’ll see.”
Grisham opened up about the injury, trying to remain positive throughout the process. This is his second hamstring injury this season, with him going out in June as well.
“It’s disappointing, for sure, but that’s part of the game,” Grisham said. “We know what we’re signing up for. So hopefully, it’s nothing too problematic.”
New York called up Jasson Domínguez after placing Grisham on the injured list. For the year, Domínguez hit .230/.270/.380 with six home runs and 14 RBIs in 53 games with the Yankees.
But losing a veteran this late in the season is tough.
The Yankees will hope for the best when it comes to Grisham, and if he can recover quickly enough, maybe a return in the playoffs is in the cards. But hamstring injuries are tricky, and the team won't rush him back until he is fully ready to go.
