The New York Yankees have some tough decisions to make about key free agents this winter.
The New York Yankees will be entering into one of the more crucial offseasons in recent memory after the team fell short in the playoffs again.
New York was swept out of the American League Division Series by the rival Tampa Bay Rays, sending them home earlier than expected this year. The Yankees did play the series without star Aaron Judge due to injury, but the team had enough talent to overcome Tampa Bay.
This team does have multiple players entering free agency this winter, and this could see major changes coming to the roster next year. One of the bigger names hitting the open market will be outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., and he has been a main talking point since the season ended.
Chisholm has said that he would love to return to the Yankees, but the outfielder did have a down year in 2026. Overall, Chisholm hit .231 with 19 home runs, 55 RBIs, and 41 stolen bases, while posting an OPS of .711 for the season.
MLB insider Chris Kirschner of The Athletic predicted what would happen to every free agent that the Yankees have this offseason, including Chisholm. Within this prediction, Kirschner has the veteran outfielder leaving New York this winter.
Many are not expecting Chisholm to return to the Yankees after his down year, but he was still impactful for New York. Despite his struggles, Chisholm still impacted the Yankees' offense, while being a strong second baseman by Outs Above Average.
But his Defensive Runs Saved were among the worst in baseball, which is an area that has hurt the Yankees. Chisholm is also a poor zone-contact hitter, with him continuously swinging and missing at pitches.
Overall, it seems as if the Yankees will want to move on from Chisholm this offseason, unless he gives them a discount on a new contract. But it is hard to see the veteran doing this, especially with this offseason being his chance to possibly cash in.
Chisholm could get a pretty nice contract from another team, and the Yankees wouldn't be too mad about him leaving. While he has helped this group over the last few years, his lapses in focus at times have also hurt the team, and New York seems ready to let him go.
But until he signs elsewhere, the Yankees will continue to be linked to an offseason reunion with the two-time All-Star outfielder.
This Yankees team will need to replace his production if he walks, but New York likely has a plan. Chisholm is one of the more polarizing players on the market this year, but he has earned his payday this winter.
