The New York Yankees' farm system has been hit with some rather concerning news.

We keep hearing about all of the impressive young talent the New York Yankees have in their farm system, ranging from George Lombard Jr. to Carlos Lagrange to Dax Kilby.

But is it possible that the Yankees and their fans are overrating their prospects?

It's a question that always seems to plague both New York ballclubs. The Yankees have certainly had some flops in recent years, and Lord knows how many "top prospects" have flamed out for the Mets.

You would think this time is different for the Yanks, though, especially based on what we have seen from the likes of Lombard, Lagrange and Elmer Rodriguez — not to mention Spencer Jones and Ben Hess — in Spring Training.

However, MLB.com seems to disagree, ranking the Yankees' farm system 26th in all of baseball, mainly because of its lack of depth.

"The good news: The Yankees have a strong quartet of Top 100 prospects, with potential 25/25 shortstop Lombard, nearly ready righties Lagrange and Rodríguez and precocious Kilby, a supplemental first-rounder last July," MLB.com wrote. "The bad news: Beyond that group, righty Ben Hess and outfielder Spencer Jones, the depth falls off dramatically, the result of New York trading an industry-high players who appeared on Top 30s since the start of 2025. The Yankees also rank first with 21 pitchers on their current Top 30."

New York is absolutely loaded with young pitching, so the fact that it ranks so low is definitely odd. But depth matters a whole lot in these rankings, and it's definitely true that the Yanks lack bats in particular.

Plus, Jones himself has fallen off most top 100 prospect lists, an indication that the Yankees certainly value him more than impartial scouts.

New York's player development has also been called into question by its fanbase on more than one occasion in recent years, although some of that seems a bit unfair based on how the Yankees are in contention virtually every season.

It will be interesting to see if Jones can finally hit the big-league level in 2026 and if the Bronx Bombers will get contributions from any of their young arms this season.

How Lombard develops will also be a major factor for New York.
