New York Yankees fans certainly won't like to hear this.

The New York Yankees absolutely need to make some roster adjustments this MLB offseason, but they might not be what the fans want.

For example, one of the biggest holes the Yankees have right now is at second base, as they declined to extend the qualifying offer to Jazz Chisholm, and the chances of them re-signing him to a long-term deal are slim to none.

So what will New York do? Is Brandon Lowe in play? Could the Yankees make a push for Luis Arraez?

Well, based on the most recent reporting from Jack Curry of YES Network, it doesn't appear that either of those additions are all that probable.

When asked by Michael Kay about New York's strategy at the position this winter, Curry seemed to be under the impression that the Yanks will be somewhat comfortable heading into 2027 with Anthony Volpe and Jose Caballero vying for the starting job.

Curry then specifically said that he doesn't see the Yankees spending big on a second baseman like Lowe, which also probably rules out Arraez, as well.

This certainly isn't what New York fans wanted to hear at the onset of free agency, and it's definitely frustrating.

And for those wondering about the legitimacy of Curry's report, he probably is the best — or at least one of the best — Yankees insider out there. He's rarely wrong, so his information is likely correct.

Now, that doesn't necessarily stop New York from upgrading.

The Yankees could explore the trade market, where someone like Miami Marlins star Xavier Edwards could be available. However, the asking price would be steep.

New York could also pursue potential trades for Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (he would have to change positions) or Arizona Diamondbacks standout Ketel Marte, although Marte's clubhouse reputation would probably give the Yankees pause.

It's still very early in the offseason. We've just gotten started, so perhaps New York could have a change of heart depending on how things shake out.

But based on how the Yanks have operated in recent years, would anyone truly be surprised if they went into next season with Volpe and Caballero as their top two options at second base?

You would hope that getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the Division Series — one year after the Toronto Blue Jays ousted them in four games in the same round — would change things, but it seems like the Yankees are intent with sticking with their current strategy.
