What exactly are the New York Yankees thinking here?
The New York Yankees must change something this offseason after getting embarrassed by the Tampa Bay Rays in the Division Series.
They absolutely cannot go into 2027 with virtually the same roster and expect it to work.
Yes, I understand Aaron Judge is returning. But he was healthy last year, and the Yankees were still bounced in the ALDS.
Alterations need to be made, and with Jazz Chisholm headed toward free agency, New York will have a tremendous opportunity to sign someone like Luis Arraez or Brandon Lowe to fill the vacancy.
But that path doesn't appear to be on their radar.
Instead, the Yankees are apparently considering going with a potential platoon of Luis Garcia Jr. and Anthony Volpe at second base, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
I'm all for keeping Volpe on the roster. He has shown time and time again he isn't afraid of October, and he is a good defender with some versatility. But he would probably work best in a super-utility role.
Garcia? I've already addressed this. I think there is absolutely a chance that Garcia is largely fool's good. He posted absurd numbers with the Washington Nationals this season. He was then traded to the New York Yankees and reverted to his career norms.
The 26-year-old is a lifetime .736 OPS hitter. He's been decent; hardly great. But you will completely nullify any offensive value he has by putting him at second base.
Garcia is a horrendous defensive second basemen. The Nationals tried it, and it didn't work. In 2025, he posted minus-17 defensive runs saved at the position.
So why are the Yankees even considering this?
I can understand potentially trying him out at third base. It would get Ryan McMahon's bat out of the lineup, and the hot corner is generally a less demanding position than second base athletically. But even that's a stretch.
Volpe is under club control through 2028. Garcia has one more year before hitting free agency. Do the math: it's the cheapest route possible for New York.
Last winter, the Yankees were lambasted by their fanbase for not doing enough in free agency. It appears that they are weighing a similar avenue this offseason.
Arraez has long been one of the best table-setters in the game. Lowe is a lefty power bat who would mash in Yankee Stadium. Both also displayed tremendous defensive improvement in 2026. So why not pursue one of them?
Instead, New York seems to be dead set on rolling with Garcia and Volpe.
Maybe the Yankees really are becoming cheap. Or maybe they're just clueless.
