Could the New York Yankees actually pull off a trade for this player?
The New York Yankees need to find a replacement for Jazz Chisholm this offseason, as the second baseman is likely departing via free agency.
Anthony Volpe is an internal option, and Luis Garcia Jr. — who played first base in Washington — has also been floated as a possibility (although that would be disastrous).
But the Yankees could ultimately peruse the market to find a solution, and that could potentially come in the form of a trade.
Joel Sherman of The New York Post recently pitched an intriguing idea in that regard, singling out Chicago White Sox youngster Sam Antonacci as a potential target.
The Yankees could put together an offer centered around top pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez, who would definitely be of interest to a White Sox club that is in dire need of some rotation help.
But would Chicago really consider this?
Antonacci just posted a very impressive rookie campaign, slashing .277/.370/.396 with eight home runs and 48 RBI over 557 plate appearances. He also stole 20 bases.
Of course, Antonacci's high on-base percentage was a bit skewed by the fact that he was hit by 29 pitches, which led the American League. But if that's part of the way he reaches base, then so be it.
Antonacci is under team control for the foreseeable future, so there is no need for a contending White Sox squad to move him. That is, of course, unless the Southsiders felt Antonacci's season was a bit fluky.
He doesn't have much power, and while he is capable of playing both outfield and second base, he wasn't good defensively at either position in 2026.
So if the White Sox could bag Rodriguez in exchange for Antonacci, perhaps they would consider it.
Antonacci would certainly be an interesting fit in the Bronx. He would be a terrific leadoff hitter, and he would help replace Chisholm's speed.
The defense is obviously a concern, but perhaps Antonacci is athletic enough where he can improve in that area. Plus, the Yanks could really use his offense.
New York is going to have to get creative this winter. The free-agent market is thin, and some of the bigger names, like Luis Arraez and Brandon Lowe, may be a bit too pricy for the Yankees' taste (which sounds wild to say).
That being said, Aaron Judge delivered a very clear warning to the organization, so perhaps New York will be more aggressive this winter.
