The New York Yankees have been linked to an intriguing trade involving Ryan Weathers.

Last winter, the New York Yankees swung a surprising trade to acquire Ryan Weathers in a deal with the Miami Marlins.

Nearly one year later, Weathers could be a trade chip for the Yankees.

Weathers has enjoyed a very strong 2026 campaign for New York, but with the Yankees having such a surplus of pitching, he could be expendable this offseason.

That's why Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller has proposed a trade in which New York would send Weathers and Luis Gil to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for top infield prospect Caleb Bonemer and right-handed pitcher Pierce George.

Bonemer is the 27th-ranked prospect in baseball by MLB.com and is able to play both third base and shortstop. Obviously, with George Lombard Jr. locked in at the latter for next year and possibly the future, the Yankees would likely use Bonemer at the hot corner.

The 21-year-old slashed .251/.380/.550 with 37 home runs and 92 RBI over 595 plate appearances in the White Sox's minor-league system in 2026, finishing the year in Double-A Birmingham. There, he posted a .924 OPS over 71 games.

Bonemer is prone to strikeouts, having fanned 161 times this past season, but he compensates for it with his prodigious power.

Additionally, the former second-round pick profiles as a plus defender at third base, so New York would certainly be interested in adding the youngster.

But would the Yanks do so at the expense of Weathers? Perhaps.

Weathers registered a 3.60 ERA over 25 starts during the regular season before succumbing to an elbow flexor strain in August. He just returned in Game 1 of the Division Series over the weekend.

The 26-year-old is under team control through 2028 and flashed terrific stuff during his debut campaign in the Bronx, logging a 9.4 K/9. However, he might be best served as a reliever given the Yankees' rotation depth.

Taking that into consideration, New York might not want to pass up the opportunity to move Weathers for its third baseman of the future in Bonemer if such a deal presents itself.

Whether or not Chicago would actually part with Bonemer in exchange for Weathers, however, might be the real question.

Weathers is a talented pitcher, but he isn't a frontline starter, and he does have a checkered injury history.

The counterpoint, though, is that Bonemer is blocked at both third base and shortstop by Miguel Vargas and Colson Montgomery, respectively, which is why the White Sox have also given him some reps in the outfield.

Perhaps Chicago, much like the Yankees, would be willing to trade from an area of depth.
