The New York Yankees have completely lost their way.
Back at the MLB trade deadline, the New York Yankees swung a surprising deal to acquire Luis Garcia Jr. from the Washington Nationals.
The Yankees needed some offense at the time with both Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton sidelined, and with Garcia being one of the top bats available, New York made a move.
Because the Yankees surrendered very little to pry Garcia away from the Nationals, it was an incredibly low-risk, high-reward move. Especially considering Garcia had posted 23 home runs and 76 RBI to go along with an .873 OPS in Washington this past year.
However, Garcia came crashing back down to earth in the Bronx, slashing .264/.302/.434 over 169 plate appearances. That was good for a .736 OPS, which was much more in line with career median of .733.
Garcia is under club control through the end of next season, so New York will have to figure out exactly where to put him in 2027.
He manned first base for the Yanks this past year, but with Giancarlo Stanton still on the roster (it doesn't appear he will get cut), the Yankees will need to find a way to work Stanton into the DH role at least on a part-time basis. That means Ben Rice would have to play some first base.
Well, the smart thing to do would be to trade the 26-year-old while his value is high. Garcia owns a cumulative 5.7 WAR through seven big-league campaigns. And outside of 2024 and 2026 where he posted OPSes of .762 and .831, respectively, he has been at .668, .686, .704, .688 and .701 in his other five major-league seasons.
There is a reason why the Nats gave him up for virtually nothing, so if the Yankees can get something for Garcia, they should just pull the trigger.
But yet, we continue hearing that New York might try Garcia out at second base — where he posted minus-17 defensive runs saved in 2025 — next spring.
Jack Curry of YES Network, one of the most trusted Yankees insiders, was the most recent to state that Garcia at second is a possibility, and it's far from the first time we've heard it.
New York has an opening at second base with Jazz Chisholm departing, and while the Yanks can choose from players such as Brandon Lowe (less likely now that he just received a qualifying offer) or Luis Arraez in free agency, they may end up just going with a triumvirate of Anthony Volpe, Jose Caballero and Garcia.
I'm not really understand the affinity for Garcia.
Yes, he got off to a good start in the Bronx, but he was pedestrian overall, and he went 1-for-10 in the Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
His bat is far from elite, and considering just how bad he is defensively at everywhere other than first base (he has also played shortstop in the past), the fact that the Yankees aren't immediately trying to sell him to the highest bidder is beyond wild.
New York has plenty of other potential options at second base, both in free agency and on the trade market. What is with the obsession of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole with Garcia?
The Yankees have completely lost their way in recent years, and their stubbornness with Garcia is concrete evidence of it.
